Senior citizen and retired armed forces officer- lip service to both by government
My husband,a retired naval officer of the rank of Commodore,is travelling as of now (14th May 2025)at 8 pm,IST,on the 12218 Kerala Sampark Kranti Express in AC 1.He is 73 and a senior citizen.He booked a lower berth from his side but he was allotted an upper berth and a young family was given the lower berth.The Indian Government's lip service to the armed forces through its Operation Sindoor yatras through the cities right now is shameful.And shame on the Indian Railways for disregarding shamelessly the right of a senior citizen to a lower berth.Shame on our nation,which doesn't teach manners to our people to respect the rights of senior citizens and which is just paying lip service to the armed forces through tamaasha on the streets! more

Operation sindoor has nothing to do with such issues. If a person has booked ticket prior to a senior citizen, IR can't change the same. At every step of life, we should not raise the issue of ex servicemen or senior citizens. While staking claim to every facility at public places, we should think of practical problems. There are senior citizens who have paid incometax in crores during their life, do not get pension, DA, Medical reimbursement and other preferential treatment any where except in jail, where they get B class facilities. more

Agree with you. This government has removed Senior Citizen Concession which was an existing facility. No government removes existing facilities to citizens. I am a senior citizen with permanent disability. The railway reservation system used to allot Upper berth to me. Many years back I took up this matter with the Railway Minister, Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav who immediately started a Lower Berth Quota for Senior Citizens. But in First AC berths are not allotted at the time of booking the ticket. Berths are allotted just before departure of train. The reason being that Free Travelers like Ministers, MP and Senior Railway Officer may decide to travel and Railways have to oblige them. In your fathers case the young couple may have connections to get lower berth against the requirement by a Senior Citizen Retired Defense Officer. I have taken up the issue of restoration of Senior Citizen Concession with PM, FM, RM etc. without any result. Even Parliamentary Board on Railways has recommended restoration of Senior Citizen Concession but Railway Minister has ignored it. We are in helpless situation. more

Isn't it sad that the same politicians who come and beg for votes from all and sundry and talk about supporting the armed forces,do NOTHING to put their money where their mouth is.
I'm aware the allotment is done at the last moment.All the more reason for the Railways to very consciously keep the interests of senior citizens while allotting berths,last minute allotment notwithstanding. more
