Scam that we faced
We have been trying to sell a tiny flat in kolkata. Day before we had uploaded the details on Magic Bricks.
In the evening, my husband received a call from a young chap claiming to be from BSF. He said that he was getting transferred to kolkata and was looking for a flat urgently.
At around 1.30, he called up to say that his friend had checked out the building from outside. He was satisfied with the pictures of the inside of the flat. He asked for some reduction in the price and made a counter offer, which was okay with us.
My husband asked him why he was in such a rush, and wouldn't he need to physically take a look at the flat.
He said that he would be visiting kolkata on the 20th when he would do that. He quickly shared his aadhar card and BSF identity card without us asking for it.
Next, he said he would make an advance payment of 2 lakhs to seal the deal.
My husband said you can deposit it in my bank. At this he said he would do it through Paytm.
When my husband said the payment was higher than the paytm transaction limit he agreed to pay 1 lakh and told my husband not to disconnect the phone while he would guide him to receive the money.
He said in the military we are not allowed to use UPI, and we have to use some special cards to make payments through paytm.
At this, my husband said money can be received even when I am sleeping. There is no need to guide me.
Chap hung up.
Looks like this is a new scam targeted at receipt transactions.
Be extremely careful while doing any online transaction, whether it is payment or receipt.
As an extra security measure, we don't keep large amounts of money in the upi linked bank account.
