Salt Sodium and Sugar will kill us Indians

Allow me to introduce you to the two Poisons of our time, with which are poisoning ourselves and also our children on a daily basis -

Uncontrolled Salt/Sodium and Sugar In our daily diet which we consume without any mindfulness.

Someone i know studied a 20 year old diagnosed with hypertension and took a detailed history of this person who has been consuming certain things on a daily basis, some common ingredients that we allow our children to consume unsuspectingly came about in the list - Readymade pasta, Namkeen, Sauce, Mayonnaise, Maggi, Cornflakes, chips, biscuits

When I got the dietitian to evaluate the total daily salt/sodium consumption of this child it came to be around 4500-6000mg of Sodium per day. The permissible limit as per AHA is 1500mg.

The parents of the kid were having an extremely hard time believing that these little snacks in the diet of their child could have contributed to their Hypertension, so my friend spent the weekend clicking pictures and evaluating the salt & sugar components of a lot of these

sharing snapshots of some daily packaged foods consumed in our households where we have marked the salt & sugar contents.

Apart from sugar, maltodextrin, starch, corn extract etc also are sugars so they should not be ignored.

Same applies for salt, sodium benzoate is salt.

I will share this in the comments more

Why HINDIANS Are eating these foods then ? Its to show that we are modernized or westernized ? If Somebody is eating let them eat. It will help in reducing the population. more
For all of us, the writing on the wall is very clear. Even, any good things in excess, is harmful. Even, very bad things, with very little consumption, is useful. So, adopt this strategy, 1. Always ensure that even good food, is consumed not more. 2. And, even bitter food is consumed, in small amounts. 3. Slight undereating is better than slight over eating. 4. Late night and rich and heavy food must be avoided at all costs. Problem is, how to avoid this during parties, marriage or reception invitations!!! more

Increase in the income of people is the root cause. Even a children of daily wagers who earn Rs.500-800 per head/day, offer such things as well as cold drinks in routine. 30-40 years back, eating such things was rare and the number of patients was much less. It will continue unabated. You see the buyers of alcohol outside the liquor vends in the evening, 80% of buyers will be so called 'poor' people. Many stay drunk even during day time. 3 wheeler drivers and rickshaw pullers also fall in this category. The freebies/manrega are adding to this menace. Recently, I got some civil work done. One mason came with coolie and charged Rs.850/- and Rs.600/- respectively. The job was for just 2 hours but they lingered on for 5-6 hrs. After completing the job, they demanded whiskey also which I refused. Are they poor ? But as per Govt. records, they are treated BPL members and offered countless freebies, even houses. As such, the consumption of harmful consumables will continue. more
Because wannabe leaders are distributing freebies, these folks expect same from citizens like us.
It is difficult to get routine repairs and service oriented jobs in the home more
Salt, Sodium and sugar is not killing and will never kill a person; an excess will definitely. I am with Sugar Technology/ Sugar Chemistry back ground and can vouch for it for sure. Diabetics may avoid sugar/ starch etc. Some learned members have mentioned about Gur in place of sugar; that is healthier but sucrose is sucrose whether consumed directly or through Gur/ Jaggery/ Brown/ Raw sugar etc. As we all know, salt/sodium and sugar are definitely required by our body, in moderate quantities. more
Too much of anything is bad. Family is our responsibility - we have to decide what to eat or not. Just because Poison is available and all others are consuming - our family should also take - then where is the family control and discipline ? more
