Rain Water Harvesting

I believe that more awareness needs to be created around the practicality of rain water harvesting, especially in areas where rainfall is abundant. It is not very difficult for individual householders to collect rain water for their own use. It only requires a little foresight and planning to connect roof guttering to flow into water tanks. Where I grew up in the Australian bush all families managed purely on rain water collected from their own roof; no other water was available. These day mesh covers are available too prevent mosquitoes from breeding in water tanks and first flush devices to flush away the first rainfall which, is often laden with pollutants and debris.
Whilst in Sringeri during monsoon seasons I collect most of my drinking water from broken water pipes, and I carry a TDS device with me to measure the 'Total Dissolved Solids' which indicates the purity of the water. It is in fact much purer than town water even after it has gone through several sophisticated filtration processes. I truly believe that this water which is freely by the Lord, should be regarded as a precious commodity and utilized much more efficiently. more
