Police to check social media accounts before giving passport clearance

In Uttarakhand DGP has decided to make examination of social media behaviour of passport applicants as part of the verification process.

I think this is introducing unnecessary discretion to some inspector who without even understanding who you are will pass a judgement on whether u can be given passport or u are anti national.

Can we please discuss this and if there is consensus, take it up for a survey.

I am not against verification (if someone is selling cocaine or prostituting) but it needs to be centralised done by MEA or MHA via a machine/set protocols than being done by local police more

Correct Decision. The So called peoples like Social worker , Fake Media Reporters, Political Gundas Spoon, & spreading Of fake Msgs. , News & other wrongful information get restricted. Too much Democracy , Freedom of speech will find limitation. more
Though CID verification is conducted at the preliminary stage , police depart. can also verify history of records in social media( this may be effective,if confidential records of a person can be fished out ). On completion of verification of all possible avenues, candidate can be called at a respective station and candidate may be asked to confess facts and inform the candidate about his history. Whether the candidate is eligible for passport or not. more

The ID of the PP Applicant should be known to the people issuing. Towards this Police is the best to decide as there is a system to find out . However this powers could be mis used to gain tat extra buck. This was Totally redduced after online application for PP. I nstead of the applicant going to the police staion and waiting for the SHO at his convenience, now after the formalities are over on line the Station sens an S.I. home for verification.A very good system. Also when there was plenty of cases of Rape, Murder chain snatching, House brglary, the COMMISSIONER OF POLICE SENT A NEWS ITEM THAT HOUSE OWNERS, TAKE A COPY OF THE TENENTS ID OF THE NON DOMICILE OF THE STATE (There will be many staying in the garb of Migrant workers.). THIS WAS DONE AS SOME WHO WERE NABED DIDNT BELONG TO THE STATE. THAT WAY THEY KEPT A TAG ON NON DOMICILES STAYING IN THE STATE . This practice had helped a great deal in nabbing the culprits imediately and stop such crimes. Ms. Sarita, these days where Money can buy Legal help just like that the Police department also has to be alert in gathering intelligence data to pin the culprits. more
Law abiding citizens need not worry about such guidelines. Only those involved in anti national activities are likely to be affected. However, many will still escape the laws and rule. Criminals easily get multiple passports and flee the country at will. more
