Personal Data Protection law is now ON

Not sure how many of you remember the personal data protection consultation started on LocalCircles a decade back and I am just glad that it has become an operational law yesterday.

However as this report by LocalCircles only says

https://www.localcircles.com/a/press/page/personal-data-leakage

Most of our data is already compromised. The focus now must be to ensure that tomorrow when someone has our data which we didnt give if they are using it, there should be an easy registry through which we can stop them from using and if they still do so, clear financial
Penalty for each misuse.

Similarly, if children misstated their age and have an Instagram discord and YouTube or any account, platforms must be mandated to correct it and seek consent. I know the second issue LC took up this year but law needs modification to require that.

Please conduct necessary consultation LC Manager 🙏 God Bless you and all LC members more

A weak law enacted after most of the data is already floating freely and available for sale on the dark net. Every Indian's personal data on the net is compromised to some extent. more
India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act is now active, giving citizens strong rights over their personal data — including the right to consent, withdraw consent, get data deleted, and receive grievance support. Companies must protect data, delete it after use, avoid misuse, and notify breaches. Penalties are steep, especially for data leaks and mishandling of children’s data. While the law has gaps (government exemptions, limited accountability mechanisms, no compensation to users), it is still a critical milestone that finally gives Indians a clear legal framework to protect their digital privacy and hold companies accountable. more
While the law is a strong step forward, experts highlight some gaps: ❗ Lack of independent regulator power The Data Protection Board is appointed by government — concerns about independence exist. ❗ No strong “right to data portability” Unlike GDPR (EU), India’s law is simpler. ❗ Government exemptions Government agencies may be exempted for national security, investigation, etc. — this needs checks and balances. ❗ No clear rule on algorithmic transparency AI systems are not heavily regulated under this law. ❗ No compensation mechanism for users Users cannot directly claim financial damages. Still — this is a huge improvement over having no law at all. more
Hope it is implemented faithfully. more
It should be enforced for strict compliance. The culprits misusing personal data should be jailed immediately after reporting. more
