Obesity spreading in India

Saw LocalCircles obesity report in Navbharat times yesterday.

Sad that despite economic survey and LC survey both highlighting issues with obesity and ultra processed foods it found no mention (let alone action) in the budget.

The disconnect of this Government with people is increasing gradually and not a good thing. No wonder stock market of India fell 1800 points more

Once again why are we asking government to do something? Only thing government needs to do is offer a clear guideline based on science and research. Why not do something about educating children in school and public service announcements on TV and radio? more
Any country health depends upon its youth health and in that way govt should have given direction that health dept will formulate some kind of norm and also involve fssai and formulate a document so that it addressess these kind of health issues for the next gen who are eating more of junk food which is becoming dominant and needs to be given direction more
Carb is cheap. Why this government? Even the previous regime had propogated the growing of carbohydrates because it scalable to mass and cheap. But that was also because the country had just come.to terms with a growing population, independence, shackled economy and all. So maybe it was a necessity then. Add to that, this government promotes vegetarianism as a virtue. The result? Carb heavy crops like potatoes becoming a staple everywhere and since we ape the USA, fast food culture eroding traditional food system within a generation. The government won't heavily tax sugar and other harmful industries like the fast food and the FMCG (which manufactures unhealthy snacks) like the EU does. Because it simply doesn't care about the masses. more
Our cities are not designed to be exercise, like walking or cycling -friendly. The emphasis is on more car ownership, crowding our already congested roads.
But who cares? As long as the pockets are being filled with taxes and other such from the automobile, FMCG, F&B and other industries which contribute to our ill health, who cares? Their pockets are being filled. Jobs are being created. The economy shows up as on the rise. Everything is hunky dory. more
