Swachh Bharat Mission

Ways for NRI Participation in Swachh Bharat

1. NRIs can pool in funds or raise funds abroad for Swachh Bharat campaigns
2. NRIs can make a trust or committee for assist in small city for develop waste treatment plant
3. NRIs with specialization in solid waste management, industrial waste and water pollution etc. could work on projects in India on volunteer and part time basis
4. NRIs could sponsor short term Swachh Bharat projects in specific areas, esp their own hometown in coordination with State/Local Government
5. State Swachh Bharat Mission Directorate could identify various villages/city areas for Swachh Bharat initiatives and coordinate an effort where the NRI funding goes to a specific area and the NRI is able to monitor progress via online dashboards and videos
6. Research projects on waste management could be funded by NRIs
7. Technology, scientific and process oriented approach could be obtained from professional NRIs and utilized in India on several projects
8. Accomplished NRIs can serve as mentors/bouncing boards for officers handling different functional area in Swachh Bharat Mission Directorate (Centre and State)
9. Every city urban local body should have a citizen advisory board with atleast one NRI if possible as it will help bring value and fresh/unbiased perspective
10. NRIs from a particular city must be made part of the city Swachh Bharat circle so they can stay connected in real time and add value
11. NRI groups could guide Tehsildars and Sarpanch in making their village cleaner

NRI Indians are a great resource and always willing to help. Unfortunately those who want to help live in the developed world where the solutions are not easily implementable in India. An example is segregation which we see in developed urban cities. Statistically however even in the developed world (except low population countries like Swiss and Germany which has spread out small populations) any poor area has mixed garbage. However their landfill of 1960 is still alive as a remote area. In india surging growth of urban cities makes a landfill site to suddenly become the heart of the city in 5 years. So we need help from NRI if they can help in showing the government technologies where mixed garbage can be separated in a plant. It does exist in few countries and have seen them working but not in the developed world. India needs India centric solutions that are not transplanted from the developed world because none have our population pressure and poor history of no planning. Urbanisation started in the developed world more than a 100 years ago. Roads, Railways including Underground was built almost a century ago for a song based on very cheap of even slave labor. Rural populations have been below 10% for decades and services have dominated their growth and GDP not just statistically (as in India) but based on the majority who are employed within services. It is very misleading for us to claim that services exceeds 50% of our GDP because it employs only a small minority. Agriculture is a minority GDP contributor but majority of people are dependent on it. Employment is hidden otherwise it could be classified. NRI indians need to help us by pointing us in directions of swaach technologies that acknowledge our problems and our situation. If 400 million indians flushed an extra 50 liters a day that amount of water or the waste could not be accommodated. Of course we want to modernisation but Wanting Indian cities to emulate and become like the developed world or give example of a Dubai or Singapore with minuscule population and nation size budgets, is such a wasteful mind game that can only create frustration and disappointment. Our NRI's are a the richest technological idea bank in the world. They need to think for India. more
Is there any possibility to compile the good case studies on waste management from NRI cities ? Any scope to adopt site/location specific strategies from those successful endeavors. ??? more
