Oil prices crashed in 2014 but the consumers in India continue to pay almost twice of what they should be paying for petroleum products due to heavy taxation. If petroleum product prices dropped by half by lowering the taxes to the correct levels then not only the common man will get fuel at much lower prices, it will have a very significant impact on the reduction in prices of a very large part of the economy dependent on petroleum directly or indirectly. Taxation revenue from petroleum products (refer point 11) forms a very significant part of government revenue especially since 2014 and I do not think it will be brought under a lower slab of GST anytime soon. This will be like killing the goose that lays the golden egg :) more
