IS MR.MODI RESPONSIBLE FOR ATTACK ON WOMEN IN INDIA ?
Recently, a group of 49 retired civil servants wrote a letter to Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi blaming him for “not speaking up” on the issue of Kathua and Unnao rape incidents.
Immediately after the accusations leveled by these 49 retired civil servants, a group 637 academics from India and abroad have written a open letter to Mr. Modi expressing their” deep anger and anguish” over the rape incidents. They have squarely blamed Mr. Modi and said that “ many of the events have occurred in states with BJP governments and all of them after the BJP assumed power at the centre”.
Sometime back, a group which claimed to be that of intellectuals blamed Mr. Modi for what they called as “spread of intolerance in the country”.
As usual, the Indian print and visual media give considerable publicity to the accusations of these groups Obviously, the objective of these group of people is to make it look that Mr. Modi is responsible for all the wrong things happening in India.
While occurrence of rape and attack on women are despicable acts and should be condemned strongly, this condition reflects the deteriorating social fibre and fabric of India for which several agencies are responsible. Cinema as well as print and visual media often portray women in such a way that it spreads an impression that women are “exploitable commodity and weak creatures’, to increase their circulation. Are they not responsible for the present sordid conditions faced by women ?
It is high time that we recognize that the society, by and large, too has the responsibility to protect the dignity of women and why nobody is pointing to this.
Finally, it is not a fact that such sordid events concerning women take place on only in BJP ruled states or after Mr. Modi became the Prime Minister.
Mr. Modi certainly is doing his best and the recent decision to hang the child rapists and ensure judgement within three months shows the determination of Mr. Modi to punish the culprits severely .
These so called academics and intellectuals should refrain from motivated campaign against Mr. Modi, encouraged by the media glare that they get. They are doing great disservice by not highlighting the real reasons and exploiting the situation to bring bad name to Mr. Modi.
