Indian secular political parties especially those governed by a single family are the closest partners of business imperials in Western countries. A news item yesterday in Daily Pioneer is an eye opener of sorts. It clearly establishes the link between corruption, secular politics and real estate. It was in consonance that Rohit Skyscapes of Pune with the backing of Nationalist Congress Party, the Panchsheel Group governed by Sharad Pawar, his groom/daughter Supriya Sule, is a director of a JV with Trump Corporation with large real estate projects in Gurgaon and Pune. This seems to have implications for the India's independent foreign policy thinking in case if Donald Trump becomes President of the US. Already there is a churning in foreign policy circles in Delhi regarding an overture by the son of Donald Trump with former CM Prithviraj Chavan regarding approval for pending real estate projects in Pune under the name of Rohit Skyscapes. India is at the cross roads of a foreign policy dilemma. Everyone understands that business must be separated from state policy. But expecting similar mindset from Trump could be a huge foreign policy blunder. India needs to take very cautious steps here. Rather it should ask PIOs and Indian CEOs of US businesses/industries for an opinion on the approach towards forward movement. more
