Increase in duty we asked for
Our own circles report is saying more people are supporting increase of duty.
We should not ask for stuff and then point issues later. more
Now, as far as import of toys, plastics, furniture etc., from China is concerned, it is because we do not produce stuff of the quality offered at that price point. If Chinese goods imports are penalised by high duty, all that we will get here will be locally made substandard goods at a price point slightly cheaper than the Chinese stuff which are usually much superior.
What we really need is to open up the economy, reduce duties on imports and taxes and encourage local manufacturers to compete with their Chinese counterparts on quality and price.
I have been through the same mindset, many decades back when we said Japanese goods were substandard, then later, Korean stuff was inferior. But really, question is, have we improved? more
