Income Tax Powers

Income tax department already has power to conduct physical search and seisure of assets.

Now it is extending to digital space. Media reports that:
Starting April 1, 2026, the income tax department will have the legal authority to break into and access your social media accounts, personal emails, bank accounts, online investment accounts, trading accounts, and more if they suspect that you have evaded income tax or they have any reason to believe that you own any undisclosed income, money, gold, jewellery, or valuable item or property on which you haven’t paid applicable income tax as per the Income Tax Act, 1961.
