Heart Stent Cost to be reduced by 50 pct

LocalCircles has actively been taking up the cause of improving state of healthcare based on your inputs. In 2015, a submission was made to the Govt reduce the cost of medicines, esp stents and other expensive drugs. Earlier this year, another poll and submission was made to ensure duty waiver on life saving drugs continue.

We are pleased to share that the Govt has announced yesterday that prices of stents will be fixed by the drug pricing authority under a mechanism similar to that of medicines under the NLEM and the price control would result in a 50% reduction. The Stent prices will be capped by the NPPA (National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority) within a month.

Thanks for your engaged citizenship and participation. It is key to improving urban daily life and governance. more

Definitely a good move. But there is something more pressing because of the sheer numbers involved- implantable IOLs for cataracts. A plethora of brands are available, at varying prices. The regulator should look into this, for patients from every strata of society are affected. Col (Dr) A P Gupta (Retd) Secunderabad more
This is very fine but will the hospitals follow this as the patients are helpless when a stent has to be fitted and has to pay the cost asked for by the hospital. Then there is another problem when the doctor asks the patient to choose between a ordinary stent and a medicated one. It would be appropriate for the Govt to publish the rates in the leading papers for the consumption of the public. more
its make mandatory for angioplasties are actually required or not & 2nd opinion is taken, while stents is necessary. more
Though it is a good move, stenting procedure has become a money making racket for most Hospitals and whether the stents are really required or not and even when there is a way to clear the blockages by medicines and clot busters, doctors recommend stenting as it brings in money to the hospital. Even the medical device stent manufacturing companies use money power to induce the doctors and hospitals to buy the stents manufactured by them to use for their patients, whether necessary or not. more
