EMPOWERING CONSUMERS: RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND ADVOCACY :

As engaged citizens, we have shared our diverse insights—gathered from media, personal experiences, and observations—on profiteering during the KUMBH MELA , the sacred spiritual gathering held every 12 years at the confluence of holy rivers, symbolizing the union of human and cosmic energies.

Consumer Advocacy Through Local Circles
Local Circles serves as a vital platform comprising four key consumer groups that help address grievances and are recognized by the relevant ministries:

Consumer Participation in Standards
Connected Consumers
*Anti-Profiteering
*Weights and Measures & MRP Enforcement
*Additionally, these concerns are actively reported in *Transforming India, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to consumer rights.

The Significance of Maximum Retail Price (MRP)
The government mandates MRP labeling on all products—liquids, solids, strips, and more—to combat past issues of black marketing, hoarding, and adulteration. These consumer circles enable citizens to raise concerns, prompting government action to rectify unfair trade practices. Ultimately, it is up to us, the people, to hold businesses accountable and prevent exploitation.

Government Action on Mahakumbh Airfares
The dedicated efforts of Local Circles members led to swift action from the Civil Aviation and Consumer Affairs Ministries. After an escalation on January 28th, where 8 in 10 passengers reported that airlines were charging 300-600% higher fares for Mahakumbh travel, airfare from Delhi to PRAYAGrAJ dropped from INR 40,000 to INR 15,000 by February 2nd. However, fares surged again by February 11th, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance.

These developments, also featured in Transforming India, emphasize India’s commitment to consumer welfare, ensuring seamless experiences for all citizens. The government is entrusted with addressing grievances and implementing positive changes.

The Survey That Prompted Action
