Corrupt practices in Healthcare profession

Last week only I had written a post about unethical and corrupt practices followed in our Health profession by almost majority hospitals, doctors and Labs, diagnostic centers who are working together and robbing the patients by forcing clinical investigations only to get their kick backs, cuts and bribes for referrals.

I am glad I see a lead story today ( June 29th) on the front page of TOI that says, "AIIMS doctors wage war on unnecessary medical tests."

On Sat TOI had reported a story about the corrupt unethical practices followed in the healthcare profession so rampantly and shamelessly by medical practitioners and it was exposed by India´s leading Gastroenterologist Dr Samiran Nundy. No of top Indian Doctors endorsed his views on kickbacks and bribes that oil every part of the healthcare machinery.

Top Cardiologists of AIIMS in Delhi have decided to start an initiative called the "society for Less Investigative Medicine (SLIM).

I strongly think the Helath Minister Dr Harshwardhan must take an immediate initiative and discuss this serious corruption in Healthcare profession with the team of Doctors of AIIMS who have taken the lead to wage war against unethical practices followed by Doctors, hospitals and clinics. There must be many such honest Doctors who believe in professional integrity and honesty all over India who can be invited to suggest how laws can be formulated to protect the interests of people. The model followed in US where audits and guidelines regarding investigations are set which makes it possible to retrieve and check data to see if particular investigation or procedure was necessary. We need to devise a system to see what can stop this loot by medical professionals and hospitals of ignorant people who often are receiving end and robbed off their honestly earned life savings.

I urge Activists of this BJP cell, take up this issue of corruption in Healthcare profession on priority with the government, PMO´s office and health Minister.

Good governance can stop this loot of people. more

Thanks Mr. Angre for flagging the issue and for appreciating my inputs. Best wishes more
Sujata... I agree with your views. PPP is the best solution to stop all sort of exploitation by the medical professionals and hospitals. And present Health ministry should work in that direction immediately as the present system is working like mafias. This is no less than extortion and exploitation of the ordinary citizens who are becoming suckers. I appreciate your positive inputs. Thanks. more
I believe that the healthcare sector needs special focus in India and may be the govt. could plan to establish more PPPs (Public Private Partnerships) in this sector to plug the problem of making quality health care services available at reasonable prices. This model might work well in India because this way the govt. through its partnership in the PPP enterprise may be able to keep a check on the exorbitant rising prices at which the health care services are currently made available by the private sector enterprises in India and and the private partner in PPP enterprise can contribute towards the quality control aspect of the health care enterprises in India. more
