Continued use of plastic bags.

Time and again, some news appears about ban on use of plastic bags. However, this practice continues unabated. Vegetable vendors , shop-keepers, all provide buyers with plastic bags and the daily garbage is a proof of the enormity of the problem. There are plastic bottles, milk bags and other plastic waste thrown all over on roads.
The administration is fully aware of the issue and its consequences. Else where in the world people are extremely sensitive to the ecology and the hazards plastic waste can create to the environment.
Its time now to take harsh measures before it is too late. Only continued pressure from the administration in curbing this menace can help. Following suggestions are put forth:-
i. surprise checks by Muncipal Corporation officials and on the spot punishment to carriers of plastic bags.
ii. sale of plastic bags beyond permissible quality should be made illegal and spot punishment imposed.
iii. Educating children in schools and colleges about ban on plastic and the hazards of plastic waste.
iv. finding a solution for recycling of plastic waste so that it does not get into rivers and ocean bed.,
v. use of alternative material such as jute and cotton / paper bags should be made available. more

We are ashamed of re using carry bags There is no alternative to plastic bags. The alternative so called cloth bags that came into use is also plastic but of different kind of weaving that makes it look like a cloth bag. The only alternative is reuse of plastic/ cloth /paper. We should keep in mind that excessive use of any type of bag is not eco friendly. Take for example paper bag. It is Biodegradable BUT WILL IT NOT CAUSE DEFORESTATION. The key is not type of material to be used. The main factor is the quality of bag that will make it re usable. Single use bags are not practical in present scenario. Moreover we should not be ashamed of re using carry bags multiple times. more
Root it out from production point and make stringent law. more
K.N. Suryanarayan, Cochin: The call, initiative and lead given by our PM is well taken and things are happening all over the country. Leaders in their locality should take the lead and invite news paper people to see the work done and to report which will create a competitive spirit in the minds of others to do something to improve in their area. Panchayats, municipalities and corporations have the required staff to take care and the supervisory staff also there to oversee the cleanliness properly done daily. The people in all these areas should join hand with them and also volunarily supervise and induce them to their work properly. Things will definitely improve. more
Necessity is the mother of invention. If bags are not available people automatically resort to replacements. As long as they are available apathy precludes the use of alternatives. Sometime back when the ban on the usage of plastic carry bags was strictly implemented the nearby flower vendor started packing the flowers in the news paper bits just as in the good old days. So it's advisable to stop manufacturing the plastic bags. People will inevitably use either paper bags or cloth/jute bags. more
Yes it will be helpful by accepting the alternative methods more
