Clean air for Delhi. Delhi air can be cancerous fo

IIT Kanpur has recommended that Euro VI fuel standards be introduced in Delhi at the earliest in order to check the rising air pollution. It has also recommended that LPG be considered as an alternative and coal burning in power plants or otherwise be stopped completely. The IIT Kanpur team recently submitted a draft report which said that vehicles are responsible for 60% of the air pollution in winter.
The study on “source apportionment of particulate matter” looked into origins of finer particles (PM 2.5) and coarse ones (PM 10).”

“As per the draft, vehicular emission and secondary particles amount for about 60 per cent of pollutants in the winter. Though finer particles are known to be the most dangerous for health, depending on their components they could be even worse. If the PM 2.5 is mostly made of benzene, which is emitted by burning of coal, it could be carcinogenic. more

Delhi's ever-soaring air pollution level could be triggering cancer in kids. A study conducted by the Newcastle University in the UK has found that incidences of neuroblastic cancer could be related to aggravated environmental factors such as air pollution. Neuroblastic cancers are a special type of tumour occurring on the nervous system, outside of the brain and spinal cord, and predominantly affect children up to age five. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has revealed that childhood cancer cases, of which neuroblastoma is third most common, have gone up from 2.5 per cent to over 5.5 per cent of all reported cancers in India since 1995. Of the seven lakh Indians who fall prey to cancer each year, roughly 40,000 are children. More so, Delhi throws up the bulk of new cases - 149 per 10 lakh population annually - second only to Chennai which records a higher 159. Dr Meenu Walia, director, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, and a medical oncologist, said: "There is indirect evidence available for the link between air pollution and cancer. more
Some truly advanced countries (like Switzerland) has car free zones and car free days in the capital. We have to learn some good things from others, not only burn-burn-burn fuel in the name of development. If public transportation is improved and made safe, electric hybrid buses are used, we can make it a law not to allow so many private diesel vehicles. I see in traffic jams or slow traffic, a lot of fuel being burnt and pollution created, and only one or two people in the car. If we have so many diesel/petrol vehicles, the children would suffer and die. Is that progress? more
