BIS has started this good intiative
BIS has started this good initiative for the first time and it is indeed a good move.
Following issues first needs to be understood by all.
1.WHETHER ANY SUCH STANDARDS ARE STRICTLY TO BE USED BY ANY PRODUCT MANUFACTURER IS IT MANDATORY TO OBTAIN BIS certification?If not than whosoever has obtained such certification and if violets the standards at a later date, how shll the BIS office or the consumer will know?
Is there any mechanism?
2.THE BIS certification once issued , how long it's validity? Is it for life time?
3. Many products comprising of so many components like gas stove, or any other products like car, scooters, bicycles,is the BIS for the whole ready product or for the parts , color or for any single component , how shall a consumer know it?
4. The products like TV SETS,mobile phones, AC, fridge, furniture, tapestry, flame and fire retardant wire/cables, switches, switch boards, lifts, tiles, even a gas lighter or gas cylinders, CNG KITS, car breaks, and like wise so many such products which are out of BIS certification , needs to be brought under it.
5. Along-with each BIS certified products , which has some number printed on it , how shall one know what is that number for?
So alongwith each such products a small pamphlet need to be given for the customer, so that one can know what that number is for and it's meaning.
6. There are BIS standards for potability of water, nowhere such standards are displayed, except on some packaged drinking water bottles, is there any standard for even packing the potable water in PET bottle? for food packaging items, like MILK, BISCUITS, BREADS, ready to eat snacks,spices, etc?
ALL THESE NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT UNDER THE BIS certification. more

BIS has to be more active and improve the common people knowledge on the products for which standards have been created and it should be at international stds with some tweaking to suit the regional flavour.Testing has to be done as per the stds and it should be made available in their website which people can look at it and the certificate should have a validity date similar to vehicles which undergo testing at ARAI to ensure that the process followed by the manufacture can be repeated.BIS should select the items they want to test and not rely on what the manufacturer send. more

It is mandatory for many items, especially manufacturing health/safety related ones. But
unscrupulous business men avoid it and display
fake BIS certificates. Due to corruption and
non-accountability, no official inspects the
products at manufacturing level or at the retail
outlets. The Licences are subject to renewal
after inspection but practically these are managed
over the table. Large quantities of sub standard
electrical/hardware items are sold in the market
without any check. more
