ATM Frauds Modus Operandi
Must read how - The hackers install a scanner to copy the magnetic strip of the bank card. Usually, a green box is attached in the ATM meant for inserting the card. A genuine device also has a blinking light. A crook brings a similar looking, slightly larger, device that fits over the green box. It flashes a similar light and fools the user. When a card is inserted, the apparatus immediately scans and copies the magnetic strip. The scanner is rechargeable and is wireless. It has unlimited storage capacity depending on the external memory used with the device.
The second step is to place a micro camera, often above the PIN keypad. A basic tiny camera with resolution of 2 MP is sufficient to record the codes being entered by the users. These cameras are also available online, starting at a price of just Rs 2,500. There are also wireless ones that can be fitted with double-sided adhesive tape. These devices have battery backup of 2-3 days. Tthe hackers are buying the skimmers from shopping portals for a mere `8,000 and installing them in the ATMs or point-of-sale (POS) machines.
And with both the magentic strip and pin they are using the card left right and center.
Police officials must become alert to this fraud so posting here because many officials may be in this circle more

Do you have any specific data about frauds perpetrated in this way? Discussing on the matter along with data would have been more purposeful and convincing, as we don't find any space left in the cage of card inserting to attach such devices. As I remember, the matter had come up through a post few months back for discussion. Please furnish your data for the benefit of the members. more

In Foreign countries there are few banks whereas in India we have two dozen nationalized banks and 2 dozen private banks besides the dozen cooperative banks and everybody have their own ATM machines too. It would be difficult restricting entry into ATM of other Banks as this is also a tool of earning commission by way of fees for these banks. However a fool proof security is needed as thieves seem to be taking away the ATM machines itself from outskirts of cities where guards are also not posted. more

Good to bring to the notice of people the methodology of copying the card strip and pin code both by camera and skimmer.Hope that the bank authorities send a team of inspectors weekly to check if any skimmer or camera is attached to their ATM machines. more

The best way to control such frauds is the entry to ATM machine after swiping the genuine ATM card as it's followed in many foreign countries. Once you enter no one can open the door from outside. Once the person inside finishes the job then next entry is possible. This will control of such fraudulent activities. more

For the modus operandi adopted by hackers, it is not necessary to have entry into the ATM room while a genuine ATM Card Holder is operating on the ATM. The only way to counter such hacking is to make it a point a to deploy at least once every day wireless devices to detect and counteract the hackers' devices. more
