Air Quality in Indian Cities - Key Issues

Dear all:

Just like the cleanliness of our neighbourhood/cities is key to Swachh Bharat, it is also important that the quality of air we breathe in Indian cities improves in the next 5 years.

Air Quality in most Indian cities falls in the Unhealthy to very Unhealthy category. This level of air quality results in significant aggravation of heart or lung disease and premature mortality in persons with cardiopulmonary disease and the elderly; significant increase in respiratory effects in general population. It also has many other side effects.

With this post, we would like to seek your inputs on what are the key issues and root causes of such poor air quality.

Once we have them, we will work on developing Solutions through a separate post.

The objective here would be to develop a whitepaper that can be shared with other Ministries and State Civic Agencies so actions can be taken to make India's air cleaner as we work on the mission of Swachh Bharat!

We look forward to your inputs!

All actions like improving the quality of roads, making flyovers, alternate roads, improving traffic signals with the intent of minimising traffic jams should be taken on top priority.Traffic jams increase fuel bills, cause air pollution, increase travel time and increase chances of road accidents. more
Civic Sense in the basic root cause for this killer -- Air Pollution -- . Public at 100% fault. Government law enforcing agencies at 500% ( five hundred percentage ) fault. Both need a severe CIVIC SENSE training. more

Corruption in town planning is the biggest reason for this. Real estate projects percentage of spaces to be ear marked for high rise trees has to be mandatory .should impose the law stringently more
