Addl Inputs: Spitting by Auto/Rikshaw Drivers

Below are your key inputs on what can be done to address the problem of spitting by auto/rikshaw and other public transportation drivers. Kindly review and share any additional inputs you have.

We will soon compile the whitepaper and disseminate to urban local bodies.

Swachh Bharat Mission

Minimizing Spitting by Drivers of Auto/Rikshaw/Other Public Transport

1. Mass awareness programs should be created to discourage spitting via billboards, television, newspaper, radio, social media, etc.
2. Movies should have a 30 second social message from lead stars at the beginning, in interval and at the end saying “No Spitting”
3. There should be a signage commonly deployed in public places called “No Spitting Zone”
4. Auto driver’s associations should be roped in to send message to drivers against spitting on the roads
5. NGOs should be deployed to educate auto and rickshaw drivers about not spitting on the roads
6. Swachh Bharat Mission should structure a program that urban local bodies can roll out with transport departments
7. It could be called “Say NO to Spitting” where any citizen can take a picture and send to a dedicated number
8. All spitting drivers could be penalised with fines by transport department in conjunction with their respective association with next violation leading to license suspension
9. As good Samaritans, rickshaw and auto riders should always ask the drivers not to spit on the roads, if they find them doing so
10. Police should also be instructed to talk to rickshaw/auto drivers whenever they find them spitting on the roads
11. Urban local bodies should engage with resident bodies and market associations to propagate the “No Spitting” message to them and their drivers/service providers. more

Besides drivers all the persons consuming pan, Tabacco Chuna , Supari & pan masala also spit. Therefore we should not single out drivers but state law for citizens irrespective of sex & age to avoid spitting and violators should be penalized. more

Collect a fine of rs 10 from anyone spitting in public. Deposit this money with govt. Likewise with anyone urinating in public, collect fine of rs 10/-. This will deter. Higher fines diffciult to collect. more
Even at taxi /auto stands no facility of urinals and spit bins. What can be expected when they are travelling. Counselling may be helpful to some extent. more
Most of the auto drivers, bus drivers, taxi drivers are smokers or they eat one or the other tobacco product. So they are forced to spit now and then wherever they are. A wide spread awareness program needs to be run by govt/ngos by putting up posters or small films on TV and cinema halls to discourage these people from smoking. Sometimes even private car drivers have been seen spitting out tobacco / paan on the road by opening car door, putting other people in danger. It will take decades to instil some basic civic sense in the general Indian populace. more
Dear Friends, I have read the inputs on the ugly habit of spitting,'Asyou like it anywhere is fine'. We have localised the habit to a few but it is far more prevalent in the society .Observe this at petrol/gas pumps, railway and bus stations, paan shops, people eating at dhabas/halwais/push cart vendors, morning walkers in parks obliging on grass with a generous blob after a roaring throat clearing effort, passengers on a bus, rail travel and so on.It is a civic cultural problem in our society and requires a top down/bottom up approach. What do I do about this as an individual?I walk up to an offending individual ,say namaste ji(irrespective of gender and age) and say ,'Kitna accha hoga agar ham pass nali mein yah ped ki jadh mein thook deen.'Success rate 90 per cent.I can add more on such bad civic sense and the role I play at my level to better things. Even drivers of Ola and Uber are spitting . These companies should penalize such drivers. more
Should stop Manufacturing.
Should tell NGO to deploy their volunteers near railway station, school, colleges, Auto and taxi stand, bus stops, etc. to disallow such people spitting here and there, and fine them heavily.
Educating such people doesnot work. more
