A REMARKABLE FALL IN VEGETABLE PRICES OBSERVED THIS PAST FORTNIGHT :
Many commonly consumed vegetables—such as onions, garlic, tomatoes, potatoes, and carrots—which often surged to ₹100 per kg or more, or hovered close to that mark, are now being sold at significantly lower prices. Like country tomatoes@ ₹ 19 /KG yesterday Potatoes @ 28/ KG Carrots were sold ridiculously low of @ ₹ 27 /KG
In earlier years, price spikes were typically attributed to monsoon failure or flood-related damage. However, the past year and a half has seen relatively stable monsoon conditions across key farming regions.
Even premium western vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, iceberg lettuce, Chinese cabbage, and turnips—which previously sold for ₹250 or more per kg—have now dropped to ₹75–₹100 per kg.
What could explain this steep fall? Overproduction following a period of shortage, with many farmers likely cultivating the same set of vegetables, leading to an oversupply.
Changes in the export landscape, possibly due to competing nations attempting to undercut Indian prices in the global market.
WE SINCERELY HOPE THIS IS NOT INDICATIVE OF A DEEPER ISSUE AFFECTING INDIA’S VEGETABLE EXPORT SECTOR.
For now, nearly all our favourite vegetables are available for just ₹25–₹30 per kg—a welcome relief for consumers.
Meanwhile, fruit prices remain stubbornly high. more
