530 crores spent on Swachh publicity

India has spent close to Rs 530 crore on promoting the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission in the media since the programme was announced in 2014, government data accessed through a Right to Information application shows.

Would like to ask the Ministry of Urban Development and Drinking Water. Is this the primary modus operandi of Swachh Bharat. Give money for toilet and then give ads. If so, is this the right use of our taxpayer money collected through taxes and Swachh Bharat cess. more

Really, it's astonishing to note how effortlessly we find ourselves finding faults with and criticising the authorities and assume our own selves to be "spiritually" beyond error or fault. Relief, however, to register at least two out of over thirty respondents who feel that it's we who need to change ourselves first. Not too long ago we left Delhi by car on a so-called "pollution holiday" and spent two weeks in Rajasthan.....Jaipur-Udaipur-Mt Abu-Deogarh-Jaipur-Delhi. Not exactly on the highways, but when the highway passed through a village en route......and this happened many times......we could notice a number of newly constructed toilet facilities, sometimes more than one inside one village. Now, this is a start, right? Give your government the benefit for it! To those who blatantly criticise monies spent on advertisements which urge people NOT to defecate in the open but in the a.m. facilities, should realise that those monies are being spent for you and on you.........to teach and educate you to realise the significance of hygiene and to keeping your surroundings clean. And this campaign of the government is not JUST about using public toilets and keeping the environment clean; it is also a message that keeping the inside of your own house clean is meaningless if you throw your garbage in the street around the corner and turn a blind eye to the hygiene in that area. This is the ultimate aim of the campaign "Swachh Bharat". People, join this campaign and contribute to it, rather than sitting on the side and cribbing about the things. CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME..... more
I dont think at all that govt is right in launching a campaign and spending money on advertising the campaign, possibly this was not the right way to implement even. How loyal are we actually on swachhta? How many of us have actually planted a tree. First & foremost swachhta required for healthy living is swachh air. Then air, after that comes our surroundings, for which this Swachh Bharat Mission has been launched. Just crying for polluted air of Delhi & NCR is not sufficient. Actual data available shows that all the major cities have got AQI of more than 150 which should be less than 50 for healthy living. What govts are doing & we are doing for the same.

We need first a campaign for Planting trees, that would actually contribute for healthy living of all the residents of this country. more
Money being wasted on ads. Rather clean the dirty citis. what impression will the foreign tourists get. Chaos, lawlessness and fllth are the reasons that we do not get enough tourists visiting us and thus denying precious foreign exchange to nation and so many jobs . more
I too think so that Govt is really doing some good jobs which has not happened since 67 yrs during rein of other Govt. so lets forget the politics and stand by good initiatives . more
Dear I think govt is doing the right thing by doing aggressive campaigns for swatch Bharat abhiyan. Because awareness of the public will help in creating swatch Bharat more
You should suggest concrete steps, just thinking and assuming does not help. more
We could use the money spent for ads, more prudently I think so. more
More than the advertisements, the Govt. should undertake reforms at ground level. Most rivers are being polluted by or with full knowledge of municipalities/ state Governments. So much so that even ground water is getting contaminated leading to vide spread of deadly diseases through vegetables/fruits. A recent movie IRADA has tried to highlight the problem very well. Hope central Govt. wakes up and pull up concerned state Governments and give them deadline for stopping all pollutants getting into the rivers. Once this happens, Mother Nature will clean the rivers gradually on its own not requiring Governments to spend hundreds of crores of Rupees with no tangible results. more
Beyond the advertisements, even the objectives were dubious by definition. The Indian babudom always identified toilets with the superstructure although the sanitation or safe sanitation is underneath. Swachch Bharat is what was intended by the PM but the babudom coverted it in to ODF.Nowadays there is a term among sanitation experts, SBM ODF Toilet indicating a toilet with no safe sanitation systems. The superstructure just provides, safety, privacy and dignity and has nothing to do with sanitation. Even these basics were lost on the babudom. Subsequently they came up with specs of substructures as an after thought. If you read the documents loaded with unadulterated stupidities, you will understand how incompetent and irresponsible theses people are. Many of the trainers engaged by the SBM programme are unaware of even the basic things like IS Codes for various aspects of sanitation. Thus the 'selection' of experts appear to be a fir case of allegation of corruption/nepotism/favouritism. A good initiative by the Government is being spiled by poor implemetation and a free run for the babudom. more
The advt agencies should not charge for these messages as they are for common interest. The Govt wants cleanliness everywhere and each should support this. more
