With the slump in international crude oil prices, masses expect the reduction in thr cost of petrol, diesel, and LPG. The West Bengal State taxes remains high and the benefit is not being passed on to the consumer, meaning thereby that the prices are being administered and really not based on the crude oil prices. But, the basis of the change in the pricing mechanism was strictly on international crude oil (basket) prices. The government has failed to hold its promise to the people of the nation. It is wrong. The duty of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and its host of products, may be enhanced to reduce consumption by masses, and incur health benefits thereby. more

Trying to increase revenue through increasing TAX on Alcoholic beverages is morally wrong. Taxing high end alcoholic product may be justified but ordinary citizens must not be burdened with harsh tax. Total prohibition is advisable but, history suggests, prohibition has served no purpose no here in the world. more

Firstly, duties on liquor must be increased substantially. This will serve both the economics and the social purposes. Secondly, for petrol and diesel simple categories of public utility vehicles and private ownership will help to manipulate the pricing. While subsidy must be extended to the vehicles like two-wheelers, autos, buses and trucks duties can be increased on private ownership four-wheelers.
