10yr old Diesel & 15yr old petrol vehicle ban

It seems that the issue is getting shifted from environmental pollutions to aging factor. Natural & technological aging and environmental pollution are to some extent interrelated when it comes to providing breathable air for mankind. In my opinion, the issues are; 1. Identify the major source imparting pollution, which in present case is identified as diesel vehicles. 2. Find a remedial measure. 3. Derive a long, uniform & sustainable implementation programme. 4. Government to develop sensitivity towards prevailing social norms or practices. 5. Ensure after effect control over market. more

In late 70s era, the politicians increased the price difference between diesel and petrol in the name of farmers help, where government had to cough huge amount of subsidy. That time the government offices went for diesel cars for administrative cost cutting and off late the price benefits gradually extended to private cars also. The trick was to benefit politicians owning huge chunk of land mass consuming huge quantity of diesels for their agriculture appliances. If you look back to price scenario between petrol & diesel, this is either equal/narrow or petrol is cheaper than diesel. This automatically induces distraction in public for diesel for private use. Second, the issue is unnecessarily stretched. See the TOI article today to fump lakhs of such vehicles out of Delhi-NCR and pollute the clean zone as well. Instead government must come out fast and with all India uniform policy ratger than piecemeal action plan so that any citizen irrespective of age group could decide for his future action plan well in advance. I know a retired gentleman owning fleet of 2nd hand cars all being sparingly used as per number of his family member. This has resulted mainly due to impropr marketing, infrastructure and environmental policy in place. As regard to availability of right & correct information, I would like to quote self experience where I got delayed just by one month to get re-fitness certificate of my merely 61000 Km run car. The issue was not as firm about two years before as seen today. I visited RTO to enquire followings: 1. If they can issue a fitness certificate. 2. If not fitness, can they issue NOC for either sale or transfer. 3. If nothing could be possible, where & how I can declare the vehicle scrapped. To my surprise, despite of running window to window no one did reply clearly. This even forced me to opt for agent/ scrap dealer. But anticipating the future problem when dealt with such private agents I decided to scrap it through authorised dealer only. To my information, the scrap yard for such act is yet not located or identified. In fact, the issue is whole hearted willingness by the concerned authorities or politicians for effective implementation. more
