eCommerce package recycling survey and addl inputs sought

To address the excessive waste generated by ecommerce platforms, members of LocalCircles including many of you have been suggesting a model to recycle the boxes and plastic packaging. Below is the survey report on the subject which suggests a cashback/incentive model could help drive recycling and reuse of packages. We request each one of you to share the same with ecommerce companies, social media contacts, as well as your local municipal commissioner, DM, any others.

Encouraging package recycling by ecommerce platforms

If you have any inputs and ideas on what else can be done to recycle and reuse by ecommerce, kindly share the same.

Do remember, less paper and plastic means, greener and cleaner cities and breathable air! more

Destruction Process – A Thought All non-consumable items (packaging material, white goods, electronic goods, automobile and its components, electrical goods, etc) have their life cycles. I feel that the manufacturer / assembler of each product / component must develop the “Destruction Process” of product / component after the completion of the life cycle. Example 1: Product: Laptop/Mobile/TV/Batteries, etc. The manufacturer must provide the destruction process of the item after it is not repairable / usable. Example 2: Product: Packaging Material- Corrugated packaging paper/boxes; plastic bottles/containers, etc. Manufacturer/producer must provide the destruction process after the packaging product has served the purpose. It is manufacturer who knows the chemical composition of the product. Hence, the manufacturer must provide the process of destruction without disturbing environment. more
We must standardise the packages in sizes. This would result in recycling the package used from one product to another. Even suppliers may be encouraged to buy back their packages if opened with care by the consumer. Packing boxes may ce designed in a manner such that these could be sealed and opened without damaging the same. Collection centres could be set up where consumer may be able to sale these boxes and then manufacturers could buy from here. more
Basically we must look for creative ideas for making renewable energy from such garbage collection. Government must work towards this. Also it should send team to advanced countries where recycling of garbages happen and implement them in India. Local bodies should act as mediators by collecting the garbage regularly sorting wet and dry garbage. Citizens also must cooperate with the local bodies. more
Recycling of eCommerce packaging is essential. Packaging materials and milk pouch, plastics must be collected free of cost and can be productively reutilised in roads. more
Please read on............GOI must follow Swedish model. Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported rubbish from other countries to keep its recycling plants going. Less than 1 per cent of Swedish household waste was sent to landfill last year or any year since 2011. Report on Dec 8, 2016 How does Sweden deal with waste? Instead of burning coal or gas, this power plant burns trash. ... Sweden is known for strikingly reducing the trash sent to its landfills. Less than 1 percent of household waste in this Scandinavian country finds it way to landfills, according to Avfall Sverige, the Swedish Waste Management and Recycling association.
