In my suburb we arranged one person with a hand cart to collect garbage from every household. But there is no system of segregation of wet and dry garbage. The collected garbage is put on the big roadside bin placed by municipality. But most of the time it is seen that the bin is over flowing to the road with unbearable stench. Apart from the bins there are many garbage dumps on the roadsides. Roadside and the footpaths are hardly cleaned. Most of the footpaths are occupied by garbage or commercial hawkers. As far as I know municipality used to throw throw the garbage on some suburban fields to rot. People of the nearby area are always complaining. There is no system of recycling of the garbage.

I live on College Hostel Road in Panbazar. The garbage collection and sweeping is erratic at best. The single dustbin on the road (a 200 litre plastic drum) is grossly inadequate to cater to the approx. 250 people living on this road (Three girls' hostels are run from houses here). Very often garbage piles up which creates another problem - the drain on the Cotton College Hostel side gets blocked up by the overflowing garbage leading to a terrible stench to develop which pervades the whole area. Larger/more bins should be placed and regular cleaning should be done. The narrow drain on the cotton college side should be widened and covered.
