Every morning and evening, i often see police picket at the Junction of Balkum, Thane(W) on the road leading to Bhiwandi via Kalher, Purna, etc. While the drivers of two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws that come towards Thane from Bhiwandi side suddenly become alert and discipline themselves on sighting the police picket, but the traffic going towards Bhiwandi on a different parallel road is as usual unruly and free for all because there is no police picket. Also, on being alerted by the oncoming traffic about the police picket, some of the helmetless and triple-riding, or even without papers motor-cyclists and some over-loaded autos take a diversion to their right on to the ''opposite direction(!)'' wantonly and in utter disregard to the traffic rules and safety of themsleves and other co-passengers and reach the Balkum junction, just passing by the police picket, right in the full view of the picket itself! It all makes a mockery of police and the traffic rules. Wonder, why it doesn't occur to police to stop making themselves a butt of ridicule and end that drama of the sorts? The general impression is to observe traffic rules if police presence is noticed, otherwise, it's a free for all! Most of the youths and adults driving motor cycles and autos in these routes are uneducated or semi-educated, but upstarts and politically influenced with the impression that they are above the law, a very dangerous phenomenon which needs to be checked effectively. About the four wheelers in these routes, less said the better, because they think they are VVIPS!
