Youth Productivity decline by pervasive social media use

India faces a severe youth productivity crisis, with 40% of individuals aged 20–29 out of paid work and many chasing unrealistic social media influencer careers—a path where only 12% earn a primary living, alongside an 83% unemployment rate among engineering graduates. Often the young people complain that unemployment makes them pursue social media fame, but what they do not realise is that social media addiction prevents them from seeking appropriate employment and erodes whatever they learned during their academic life.

To transform this demographic challenge into an economic opportunity, a multi-pronged strategy combining early school intervention, vocational trade reform, strict regulatory overhauls, industry partnerships, and cultural shifts must be immediately taken up.

Early intervention in Classes 9–12 should introduce reality checks on actual success rate of social media careers, transparent earnings data, aptitude testing, and digital literacy workshops that position social media as a business tool rather than a standalone career. Central to the strategy is a trade education revolution inspired by the German Dual System, targeting 10 million seats across 500 trades by 2030 through a model combining four days of on-the-job training with one day of vocational schooling. Supported by ₹10,000 crore in government infrastructure funding, the model offers student stipends (₹8,000–12,000 monthly) and corporate training subsidies (₹15,000–25,000 per apprentice) across traditional, service, and emerging sectors.

Regulatory reforms aim to clean up engineering education by capping annual fees at ₹50,000 and restricting accreditation to institutions achieving at least a 70% placement rate. Many of today's engineering graduates have neither the aptitude nor the minimum ability to do well in an engineering career. Less said about the non-professional courses, the better. Simultaneously, corporate integration should enforce skill-based hiring, mandatory internships, and apprenticeship preferences over standard degrees.

A ten-year implementation roadmap must be made through pilot programs scaling up nationally, and optimising outcomes, aiming for a short-term reduction in social media distraction and a long-term boost in the youth employment rate. Ultimately, shifting public perception through parent education, media responsibility, and political consensus is crucial to establishing skilled trades as respected pathways out of poverty and driving national economic growth.

India's so-called demographic dividend is already dwindling away. Any further delay in channeling youth away from social media into other meaningful careers can be disastrous to Indian economy.
