Wonders of Green Tea......

Friends, enough and beyond has been written about green tea and its numerous health benefits. How exactly does it help your body?

The story of green tea began in the year 2,737 BC. Emperor Shun-Nung, the father of medicinal herbs, discovered it by accident during a voyage and realized, it had important medicinal properties.

In ancient China, green tea was used to cure infection, headaches, indigestion, depression etc. Research has proved the green tea delays the onset of age, keeps teeth healthy, prevents inflammation and infection, and also helps to delay alzheimers and parkinsons.

All kinds of tea, be it black, green or oolong, comes from the camellia sinensis plant. The color of the tea depends upon the amount of fermentation it has been through. Oolong tea is partially fermented, black tea is completely fermented and green tea is not fermented at all. It is produced by steaming fresh tea leaves at very high temperature.

That tea is rich in antioxidants is a given, but green tea is known to contain large amounts of all types of an antioxidant known as flavonoids.

General advantages of green tea are:

Reduces overall cholesterol levels....

Fights cancer.......

Helps in losing weight..................

Boosts immune system..........

Helps fight tooth decay.........

Prevents diabetes and helps reduce blood sugar......

Improves bone formation and bone density.....

Reduces risk of Parkinson's and Alzheimers......

Helps skin stay supple and keep wrinkles at bay.....

SEE, IF YOU TOO CAN SWITCH OVER TO GREEN TEA.... more

Thanks, with such great benefits I will increase the intake of green tea more
Thanks for your queries, the answers are as follows:

1. Green tea is a species on its own and is very different from any "black tea".

2. Preferably use green tea as leaves, tea-bags may be the alternative. Specialized tea-shops are there Delhi/NCR.....google for them.

3. We at home use KORAKUNDAH make of Indian green tea, it's also organic.

4. For preparing green tea for drinking, read this: Bring water to boil and then allow it to cool down to about 80 degC (meaning wait for about 5 minutes), only then pour it into the teapot/mug/cup containing tea leaves. Allow it to brew for at least 3 minutes. Stir before drinking. do not add sugar or honey or lemon........drink as is.

5. Drinking method: After finishing the first decoction pour fresh hot water (about 80 degC) into the container, let it brew again for a minute or so before drinking. The same applies to drinking green tea out of a teapot. You may safely repeat this once more viz you may brew fresh tea three times out of the same quantity of tea leaves.

6. Firstly, please understand that green tea does not (should not) provide any flavour or taste, you'll have to get accustomed to that. Secondly, it will happen that tea in the bottom third of the cup (if it contain tea leaves) will start tasting somewhat "dry" and you may get the impression as if you are getting a sore throat...that's the time to add fresh hot water into the container.

7. Quantity of tea leaves: Sorry dears! there's no hard and fast rule for that. You'll have to "hit and try" and find a solution to suit your own individual "taste". So far as I am concerned, I drink at least three mugs/cups of green tea every morning......no added sugar or honey or lemon or anything.........renewing the decoction without adding any more tea leaves. Oh yes, the quantity of tea leaves that I use is just "one teaspoonful, flat" for one mugful of water........say, about 330 ml. And I learnt it from the Chinese......firsthand!

8. Just remember: the advantages of green tea are "inherent".......odourless, tasteless and sublime.........that's what our teacher taught us about some chemical gases, I've forgotten which ones.

Allow me to share an incident with you. During my very first visit to Japan in 1980, our Japanese agent (a young man in his seventies) illustrated to us the advantages of green tea. I was.......unfortunately......too young to understand or even register those wise words. But today, when I hear that Japan is the only country with maximum number of "centurians", I recognize the wisdom inherent in drinking green tea for longevity......and that too not on a bed in hospital or at home.

And I yet owe an answer to our good friend Karan Kohli. No, my dear, GREEN TEA HAS NO, ABSOLUTELY NO 'NEGATIVE' (meaning harmful) SIDE-EFFECTS..............

Allow me here to make just one more comment: Nature, dear friends, has provided us with opium on one side and with green tea e.g. on the other. And Nature has left us humans to decide what we wish to choose and relish..........need I say anything more?

Bless you all for listening...... more
