WHO Fact Sheet on Chikungunya

The details can be seen through the following link:

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs327/en/

A key point to note from this fact sheet is that Chikungunya is not directly responsible for any deaths but it can contribute to deaths in older people with other complications.

Quote from the WHO fact sheet:

"Most patients recover fully, but in some cases joint pain may persist for several months, or even years. Occasional cases of eye, neurological and heart complications have been reported, as well as gastrointestinal complaints. Serious complications are not common, but in older people, the disease can contribute to the cause of death." more

Dear All, Media like a chameleon focuses its sights only where its benefactors want it to focus. Is the disease absent in NOIDA-GZD, GURGAON? Is the status of preparedness to attend to patients in Delhi any way inferior to that in other metros and even other parts of NCR of Delhi? However, it is noteworthy that Govt of Delhi because of its peculiar structural and functional anomaly has NOT DONE/ HAS NOT SUCCEEDED IN DOING ENOUGH towards PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO DISALLOW THE START OF DISEASES as PUBLIC HEALTH is not priority of any government and centre govt is equally to blame. Why even after 70 years of independence, we collect less than 21% of Sewage which gets treated? Why open Drains ? Why inter-mixing of Potable water distribution and Storm water Piping? Why inadequate measures for collection of storm water? Look at the roads even in Millennium City of Gurgaon, NOIDA and Delhi? Pits do store rainwater to breed mosquitoes. CENTRE GOVT should not work on old theory that THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE to BJP or CONGRESS and only they can play the ping pong of public blame game and others do not matter. Aam Admi has become old enough in 70 years of poor governance of our country. The only option which our constitution does not allow is outsourcing the governance. So, we need to dismiss political propaganda and put pressure on all governments to eliminate the root causes and make PUBLIC HEALTH better. Prevention is always better than cure. LG with its bureaucracy can do nothing much but waste a lot of paper, same as our parliament does. BJP has not been able to cut wasteful expenditure and allocate more budgets to PUBLIC HEALTH or promote PPP when Govt has tasted success in PPP in Road Infra, why not in water, Sewerage Systems, Management of Municipal Solid Wastes or even taking Private sector as 50% partner in LOCAL SELF GOVT. and do away with its dependence on IAS officers who have not been able to maintain their quality standards of services. more
Thanks Rajiv Ji for the right information. Unfortunately for a common man the disease is debilitating and always leads to suffering. Unfortunately Govt apathy and inaction in preventing and controlling such a disease should be their first responsibility. Public health measures are most important in any Civil Society but in our country - Govt action is a far cry and is reduced to lip sympathy. more
Whether the disease is fatal or not fatal is not the issue. The apathy of the authorities in taking preventive measures and to take measures after its spreading in the city and further non availabity/shortage of medicines to treat the patients, is it not sad commentary on the sick style of functioning of authorities and serious deriliction of duty on the psrt of those sitting at the helm of affairs? The stupid tweets that CM &DY CM does not have authority to purchase even a pen further bancruptcy of mind of political leadership. In crisis management nobody can afford to earn a bad name by putting procedural hurdles in relief measures like procurement of medicines for treatment of masses in government hospital. Only what is needed is the will power and goid intentions on the part of authorities to act rather than react by indulging in blame game. more
Public Health and Prevention of diseases is NOT A PRIORITY FOR GOVERNMENTS IN INDIA. NOT DOING PUBLIC GOOD HAS SO MANY EXCUSES AND REASONS BUT FOREIGN JAUNTS, WATCHING SELF INTEREST EVEN AT COST OF PUBLIC GOOD AND ENJOYING TAX PAYERS MONEY IS THE ORDER OF THE DAY. WHY CANT THERE BE A MORATORIUM ON FOREIGN VISITS FOR A QUARTER OF THE YEAR AND RELEASE SUCH FUNDS FOR PROVIDING OF PIPED SEWERAGE AND WASTE WATER COLLECTION SYSTEMS ATLEAST. GOI DOES NOT HAVE FUNDS EVEN FOR PROCESSING 100% SEWAGE IN THE CAPITAL AND SAFE PROCESSING OF OVER 8000 MT/M OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE !! SHAME ON NATIONAL POLITICAL PARTIES ! more
