What makes a good Opposition

Dear Friends:

Below are your key inputs on the subject. Kindly review them and if you have anything additional, please post it as a comment to this post.

We will soon compile this and publish for reference of Government and Opposition parties at national and state levels.

What Makes a Good Opposition?

1. Opposition should oppose but with an alternative model or solution
2. Personal criticism on private matters should be avoided
3. Opposition should not waste times in useless obstruction, shouting, walking out etc.
4. Members of the opposition party must be well qualified and updated on different subject
5. Unnecessary obstacles shouldn’t be created in the functioning of the house
6. There should be no caste and religion based welfare measures and other ill-natured selfish practices by the opposition
7. Opposition party should do a healthy debate after analyzing the steps taken by the Government and tell its advantages and disadvantages to the people
8. Good opposition has to pinpoint drawbacks/issues which can help Government to rectify bills and other decisions. At the same time Government should also listen to the opposition
9. Priority should be given to the interest of nation above all political and personal matters
10. Opposition parties should always engage in collection of facts and data with each member given a specialized task and area, which should be presented in sessions not only to move against but suggest optimal solutions agreeable to both parties
11. Opposition should be in a position to acknowledge and accept good initiatives and schemes announced by the Government and help for implementing the same in the interest and development of the country and its citizen
12. If it is against the interest of the nation, opposition should oppose with suggestion for amendment or suitable alternatives more

Opposition should not mislead the people on government's proposals, bills, etc... Getting personal, shouting instead of putting across valid points, pointing fingers at others, etc... can be avoided. In short, maturity in approaching a problem should be there. more
I like the points that Rajender Pratap ji has put forward, point number 7 onwards should be the core. more
Opposition should not be only to oppose everything done/proposed by the government. they are not at all elected to the Houses for this purpose. 2. Opposition should play an effective positive role for the interest of the country and its citizens. 3. Instead of opposing everything, they should make good suggestions keeping in mind the nation's interest, to bring in necessary improvement/modifications in the government's proposals/bills. 4. Once they are elected to the State Assemblies/National Parliament, they are expected to work for the benefit of the entire state/nation and not only for their respective constituencies. 5. All the members of the Assemblies and Parliament are handsomely funded by the governments for doing developmental works in their respective constituencies. Withe these funds they can carry out good works for the benefit of the local people, which would ultimately benefit them in the nest elections. 6. The members of the Houses sitting on the opposition benches often forget the dignity of the houses as well as of their own and engage themselves in chaoism in the houses itself tarnishing the nation's image as a whole. This must be stopped. 7. The members in opposition should be constructive and pro citizen/nation. more

Opposition members should act responsibly in any debate. If any effort is made to disrupt the proceedings, then such members should be disqualified after some fixed number of warnings. They should not be allowed to contest the next elections. They should miss at least one election. more
