UPSC Civil Services Examination

This is regarding the recent agitation against the UPSC civil services preliminary examination by a group at Delhi, for which the Honourable Minister of DoPT has appointed a 3 member committee. For those who might not be clear of this issue, let me explain: UPSC civil services preliminary examination is conducted every year by the UPSC for selecting suitable candidates to the prestigious Civil Services. It consists of 2 objective type papers:a General Studies paper which tests the candidate's knowledge in subjects like history, polity, economics, general issues etc. The second paper is called CSAT which tests the candidate's aptitude, mental ability, basic knowledge in reading comprehension(english passages) and maths(of tenth standard level). The opponents of CSAT have been claiming that CSAT paper proves to be a great disadvantage to hindi and other regional language students, especially those from rural backgrounds. This is not true because UPSC has made it clear that the english and maths level in CSAT paper would only be at Tenth standard level.Furthur, questions on other areas like reasoning, logical ability and mental ability would be prioritised over quantitative maths.Ability to read and understand english passages cannot be claimed as an incorrect eligibility by the UPSC,for such services which form backbone of the country's administration.Hence I strongly believe that with regard to better selection, the present system should be retained and the government should not take any decision(like scrapping CSAT paper) in haste.I would like put this resource for discussion and hope the correct message reaches the government, saving the UPSC and Civil services which would be the dream of several aspirants. more

Persons for government need to be made service oriented, this calls for selecting them after Eigth class, providing very dedicated training. more
Sir,if you are not able to comprehend small passages asked, how are you expected to read and comprehend very important documents which might be mostly in english..How long will it take to teach such comprehension,if one is not able to even read and understand school level passges. This should also happen in the midst of the normal training means how long can you expect the training to extend? Also arent these officers who should play an important part in the administration of the country,so shouldnt they be expected of atleast school level english and maths?Isnt that the language that can connect our country with the world and the people who might be representing the country in several international arena should be expected of knowledge of basic english right sir..would this be too much to ask? more
You are not thinking objectively, teach English after selection is over. more
