It is high time when Govt has to come out with food safety norms with strict copliance more  

The dark sides of different colours being used in food items and drugs are quite horrifying and dreadful. The FSSAI and other related government agencies should immediately look into the matter, ensure that all needed precautions are taken and laid down precautions are practised prior to adding any colours to any food items, drugs and other consumable items and cosmetics as well. After full satisfaction for themselves, FSSAI & other agencies should make their findings public with the assurance that all manufacturing units are strictly following the laid down norms and their products are 100% safe to consume/use. Let us invite immediate attention of the government towards this sensitive issue with the hope that corrective steps will soon be taken to save the citizens of the nation from slow poisoning. more

Mr. Murli Dhar has posted a very good link, giving basic information on food colours. In addition tto that, each Food Colour is regulated to contain a specific limit of Heavy Metal contents, present either in free metal form or its salt such as its oxide and other impurities as well. If the colour does not meet those parameters, those cannot be used for consumption, not only for human but also for animals (e.g. Pet animals). Similarly, there are set of norms for colours to be used in Drugs and Cosmetics as well. Those, who are interested in further details, may please refer IS 4707 modified in 2007 or later. https://archive.org/stream/gov.in.is.4707.2.2009/is.4707.2.2009_djvu.txt But, my personal experience says that, this aspect is highly disregarded in India, especially in unorganized sector of the industry.
