Production of Wheat reached up to 95.32 q/ha.- One farmer in Ujjain district used variety HI-8663 (Poshan). KVK,Ujjain was instrumental in making available 50 kg breeder seed from IARI, Indore. The crop was sown in the month of November with full package of practices. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (RVSKVV) Ujjain (M.P.) was instrumental in providing 50 kg breeder seed of wheat (Variety- HI- 8663) which was sown in the 0.4 ha land. Crop cutting was done in the presence of revenue officials, Patwari, SADO, RAEO and other local villagers who witnessed the bumper production of wheat (HI-8663) recording 95.32 q/ha (Coursey; ICAR) The highest yield of wheat as per Guinness Book of Records was 156 Qtl/ ha in New Zealand. Definitely we can say that India has a huge potential in improving productivity and gap in actual and potenial yield should be minimised through reserach. more
Bhima Shubhra ( Variety of White Onion)- A Ray of Hope for Vidarbha Farmers Patur is a small village in Akola district of Maharashtra. This village comes under the rainfed Vidarbha region. A farmer from Patur village used to cultivate traditional varieties of onion in his 1.25 acre land, but the production was far below the expectations. White Onion is preferred over red onion in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research (DOGR) developed a high yielding white onion variety 'Bhima Shubhra'. This variety was recommended in the workshop of All India Network Research Project on Onion and Garlic at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Kalyani during 18-19th April 2013 for cultivation in kharif and late kharif seasons. This variety matures in about 110-115 days after transplanting during kharif and 120-130 days after transplanting in late kharif. A farmer from Patur village (Shri Namdeorao Adhau) purchased 5 kg seed of 'Bhima Shubhra' from DOGR and sowed onion crop on 1.25 acre area on raised bed as per recommended technology of DOGR. He obtained a record marketable yield of 21 tons/acre of good quality bulbs with uniform size and without doubles and bolters.(Coutesy : ICAR). more
Efficient Use of Farm Pond Enhanced the Income : Smt. Kesar Devi (Rajasthan) volunteered to adopt the farm pond technology. She constructed a pucca tank for rainwater harvesting in which the run off from the village was harvested and efficiently used as supplemental irrigation to cotton and managed mid-season drought. Further, she also came forward to adopt the same technology in her own field and constructed a farm pond with lining (kachcha) having capacity of 1242cu m (size: of 18 x 30 m top; 12 x 24 m bottom; 3 m depth with 1:1 side slope). Before the intervention, Smt. Kesar Devi used to take up only mixed cropping of maize and blackgram during kharif and leaving the field fallow during rabi season. Even in the mixed cropping of maize and blackgram, mid season droughts used to affect the yields. It used to result poor yields and often failure also. Due to availability of water in the farm pond, Smt. Kesar Devi diversified the cropping pattern from maize and blackgram mixed cropping to improved intercropping systems of maize and black gram (2:2) and groundnut and sesame (6:2) during kharif. She also raised mustard and chickpea during the rabi season. Efficient use of farm pond water to kharif crops during dry spells and pre-sowing irrigation to mustard with efficient micro-irrigation method (sprinkler) made agriculture a profitable venture for her. It increased cropping intensity to 212 % from 100 % and the net returns increased up to Rs. 35,090/hectare from Rs. 15,090/ hectare. Smt. Kesar Devi, is now a successful woman farmer showing the path to other farmers to manage mid-season drought through farm pond technology. (Courtesy: ICAR, New Delhi) In Madhya Pradesh, the ongoing scheme on rain water harvesting is "Balram Tal Yojana" is also beneficial for the farmers. Conclusion : All the State Govt should promote rain water harvesting structures and local structures at KVK level may be designed to impress upon the farmers by using DRIP & Sprinkler sets. All the subsidy on DRIP & Sprinkler should be linked with rain water harvesting structures. more
