Should one be careful of Litchis FSSAI

The number of mysterious deaths of children in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district has risen to 54. Though the exact cause has not yet been confirmed, health professionals suspect the deaths to be linked to toxins present in lychees (also spelt as litchis).

Muzaffarpur is the lychee bowl of India. The children showed symptoms of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), a neurological illness that involves inflammation of the brain. AES is colloquially known as "chamki bukhar" (chamki = seizure).

The cause of death in children is hypoglycaemia -- low levels of glucose in the blood. These children are from the poorer sections of society. Malnourishment is rampant. The children spend the day in lychee orchards eating lychees -- sometimes unripe or half-ripe ones too.

The children return home in the evening and sometimes skip dinner. This leads to night-time hypoglycaemia. more

In Bihar first we produce the kids in mass and then we see their deaths from our own eyes.Even after 70+ years of Independence Health Services in Bihar is very POOR.Needs introspection by both State and Central Govt. more
If litchis are to be blamed, should we not be having an epidemic of encephalitis all over the country since they are on sale everywhere?
Is this the first time we are trying to link litchis with encephalitis; if not why has the government not done anything about it?
Going by the present issues being taken up in Parliament, health care seems to be nowhere on the agenda. more
Hua to Hua! More crisis->more aid->more cut money->more power etc. be it at the cost of peoples lives. 120 Crore population and more than 2% growth rate. No problem, number will be replenished! We are forgetful nation with very high tolerance level. Mera Bharat Bahut Mahan Hai! more
CM Bihar has not visited that area or not said word about it. Busy playing political game to win favors . Health and Agriculture the most important issues are neglected at Centre and States. more
ALL OF US ARE PLAYING THE "GAME OF GUESSING"..!!.. THE ONLY TANGIBLE LEAD SEEMS TO BE THE LOCATION OF THE FLARE UP OF THIS DECEASE..!!.. WHICH IS MUZZAFFARPUR. THIS PLACE IN BIHAR, IS FAMOUS FOR ITS LITCHI PRODUCE. CAN NOT SOME GOVT. BODY DO SOME STUDY ON THIS AND PUBLISH THE CAUSE OF THIS OUTBREAK, SPECIALLY IN MUZZAFARPUR.?? . IT IS ALSO A WELL KNOWN SECRET THAT MOST OF THE LITCHI FARMS/ORCHARDS ARE OWNED BY POWERFUL POLITICIANS WHO HOLD THESE ORCHARDS TO QUALIFY FOR BEING DECLARED AN "AGRICULTURIST" WHICH AGAIN QUALIFIES THEM FOR "INCOME TAX EXCEMPTION" AND AS AN OUTLET FOR INVESTING THEIR "BLACK MONEY"..!!..NO WONDER, NO GOVT BODY HAS COME OUT WITH A REPORT ON THESE DEATHS AND NATURALLY "NO INVESTIGATIVE REPORT" FROM OUR TAINTED MEDIA...!!.. more
