Road accidents a routine affair, but not getting enough importance

I have been observing that not so important and urgent matters are being discussed, but not road accidents.

For example:
Women Security (an exception though)
Deployment of CRS Fund
Challenges to handle Medical Emergencies
Age for an LKG student
Neeti Aayog
Modiji Baachao - Cast based Reservation
Husband harassment issues.

These are important, but not that serious as road accidents are.

For, not only road accidents are a daily routine affair across India, it takes away human lives too.

I do hereby invite suggestions from wise people on this.

My views: -

Road accidents are of these types:

1) Vehicle crushing or injuring pedestrians
2) One vehicle brushing another while overtaking
3) One vehicle collides at the rear of another vehicle due to sudden braking by vehicle ahead
4) One vehicle collides with another vehicle head on

I will discuss each such type one after another.

1) Vehicles crushing or injuring pedestrians:
Cause: Existing rules and infrastructures. Rules say vehicles first, vehicles next, vehicles last; no space for pedestrians.
Existing infrastructures: Don't have color light signals both for vehicle and walkers. All roads are not having footpaths.

Rules to be changed to human lives first, human lives next, human lives last, vehicles almost no place:
It implies to give topmost importance & priority to pedestrians / human lives.

All roads will have to have footpath and color light signals both for vehicle and walkers. Here rule will be like this> When pedestrians are crossing roads on zebra crossing mark and vehicles on cross roads are stationary, vehicles will remain absolutely motionless as long as pedestrian has not climbed opposite footpath. Pedestrian might have set foot on road when signal for pedestrian has turned yellow from red or even just turned red from yellow, but all vehicles must remain absolutely motionless as described above.

To stop side brushing by vehicles:

All roads, whether one way or a road with central divider must have sufficiently wide lane; each lane being marked for a specific speed range.

To stop colliding at the rear of vehicle: All vehicles must drive keeping a safe distance between them. A thumb rule: Following vehicle MUST be able to view rear wheels of vehicle moving ahead at all times. It will tantamount to lesser number of vehicles on road at any given time compared to present state. This can be achieved as a short time solution by restricting private vehicles on certain day/s of week as followed in Gurgaon. The long term solution is to reduce issuing if driving license. A formula may be devised by taking total lengths and space to be left between vis a vis number of vehicles.

The last type can be removed altogether by making all roads one-way or placing a divider through centre of roads where one-way is non-feasible. more

Madam Dipti Jain, My intention of starting this resource was to tell a truth: Challenges to handle Medical Emergencies, Age for an LKG student, Neeti Aayog, Modiji Baachao - Cast based Reservation and Husband harassment issues and such other issues will come and go; they are all temporary and mostly not life threatening. But road accidents are. Most population of India have to walk either to catch a bus, or come out of personal car and walk a few meters, to do the daily marketing of vegetables and other eatable stuff and so on and so forth. All these people are liable to meet either gravest injury or simply death. And this is a raw truth. Therefore, I am rather pained to understand that you wanted to waive "Pedestrian crossing must be the priority"! Did you mean to withdraw pedestrian crossing? Or, did you mean it should remain as top priority? Let me add that my suggestion on punishment for rule breaking should be like this: - Severest punishment to vehicles for breaking a single rule however simple rule that might be. But pedestrians must not be punished for breaking even moderately serious rule. On sufficient distance between two vehicles I had stated that as a short term solution some restriction to be imposed on movement of personal vehicles during certain day/s of week; the way Gurgaon works. And a long term solution is to reduce issuing of driving license. Self discipline and such noble things aren't for Aam AAdmee. That I know, you too know. It's purely theoretical. General people don't have this self discipline character in themselves. But if you leave no opportunity to overtaking, side brushing will surely be reduced. Big vehicles be banned!Isn't it ridiculous? Does accident take place because ONLY big vehicles collide at the rear of another vehicle? Does accident take place because ONLY big vehicles brushes another vehicle while overtaking? Does accident take place because ONLY big vehicles collide head on? more
( Attached.... Also replied to some other post "Breaking signals seems to be new fashion in Pune") Sir, BREAKING RULES is becoming part of LIFE, or say its becoming BIRTH RIGHT.... Vaibhavee well said..."Fashion nahi Passion" all Passionates counselling be done once, second time licences suspended and later be put behind bars(rigorous 5-8 days) and licences suspended. Parents licences be suspended also(for a short term). Parents to report the court daily while under suspension. This will make the parents control the child. more
Sir, You comments and points are worth, but the infrastructure to the population does not match. I agree this MUST happen, but some points are to be waived. 1. Pedestrian crossing must be the priority. 2. Sufficient distance also required, but the vehicle population to roads does not match. 3. MOST important is the SELF discipline(overtaking even when the signal is RED, and blocking the other side traffic) 4. SELF discipline will solve major problems in traffic. 5. Importantly new vehicle registration be stopped for some period, high speed vehicles be banned( max.60km/ph) 6. Big vehicles(4 wheelers) be banned in traffic (max length 2250mm app.) more
