Private Healthcare

Private Healthcare in the country has become a menace for ordinary citizens. Quite often, they charge arbitrarily and make repeat bills for same set of investigations or medical exam and cheat unaware patient party who are more concerned with the health of the patient. They do not have any ethics that human values are more important in times of medical emergency. Medical insurance does not always help. Previously the agents of insurance companies had a nexus with the hospitals so that the insured amount was consumed with superficial treatments to be followed by actual treatment to be borne by the patient from his/her pocket. Now PSU insurance companies have made arrangements with private hospitals for a PPN rate for some specific hospitalization cases where doctor's fees, hospital rates are fixed. These rates are not updated regularly so that neither the doctors attached to the hospital nor the hospital itself are willing to accept the package rates and harasses customers by not allowing cashless hospitalization which requires a doctor's signature. They do not even inform the patient party that a package PPN rate exists for the treatment. Once the patient spends at the hospital from his/her pocket and submits bills for reimbursement from the insurance company, the company pays only the PPN rate which is one third to half of the actual expense made at the hospital. In the process, the insurance company gets protected, the hospital mints money but the poor patient suffers financially although covered by medical insurance. With deterioration of services in govt hospitals, people are forced to go to private hospitals who are minting money taking advantage of helpless situation of the patients. This has become a roaring business with subtle support of political muscles. How can we save ourselves from this menace? more

By not buying medical insurance. When you buy medical insurance it is the insurance company that gets covered not you. more
It became a habit to every one to suspect the other professional because of their own bitter experiences. Only way to escape from these bitter experiences is to enquire thoroughly multiple people about the doctor or hospital and careful choosing the doctor or hospital. Do what we could able to do and do not criticize every one . Lakshmi Kanth Ponnuru more
cheating is everywhere and private hospitals are no exceptions. A public awareness is a must. The elected government should come the rescue of the common man. Actually the government run hospitals are malfunctioning or at least not up to the mark. This gives an upper hand to the private sector. Answer to the solution is that the government sector should be really competent to the private sector and common man should not be left to the mercy of private hospitals. more
Wrong practices and charges by private hospitals must be reported by patients or their near and dear ones to social forums. In fact a rating ans experiences of private hospitals may also be obtained from members and experts of this group. more
If you are keen for Mediclaim, the four nationalised GICs are still the best. Atleast they will never cheat, being Govt Companies. No scheme exist for Senior Citizens which is trust worthy !! more
