President of India covers Social Media enabled Participative Governance

Dear Friends,

The President of India Pranab Mukherjee covered Social Media enabled participative governance in his speech in Parliament yesterday. Here is the exact quote:

"The National e-governance plan will be expanded to cover every government office from the centre to the Panchayat; to provide a wide variety of services to citizens. Emerging technologies like Social Media will be used as a tool for; participative governance, directly engaging the people in policy making and administration"

This is exactly what we are doing together through this circle - engaging citizens in policy making and administration.

Starting at the National circle level, we soon hope to create circles for every Ministry/Department and eventually circles for every constituency for local governance.

Thanks for invaluable inputs and active participation in India!

I have a GRUDGE against PAMPERRED MUMBIKARS. HOW LONG common rail travelers numbering almost 20 million going to suffer AT THE COST OF PAMPERRED MUMBAI PASS HOLDERS. Where THE COMMON MAN PAYS FULL FARE FOR HIS TRAVELS Mumbaikars ONLY PAY FOR about 5 days charges for travels of about 25 days....THEY GET A WHOPPING 80% CONCESSION. And there are ONLY about 4 million or so WHO ARE PAMPERRED AT THE COST OF ABOUT 20 MILLION THAT TRAVEL IN THE COUNTRY ON AN AVERAGE DAY more
We need to invite Modi ji's PMO access to this circle. There is a lot more valuable discussions happening here that they need to see and take inputs from. more
We have a Powerful Fabric of Social Media+Television+Internet+Cinemas+Print Media So True.. We have a very strong Social Media fabric in this country, reinforced further by a strong presence and deep reach of the Television network, Indian Cinema, Internet and deep rooted Print media. Besides, *we also have a very strong human network especially with the students across all our educational institutions, the working population and the migrant societies both in the public and private sectors.* We need to leverage all of them in a systematic way for the Transformation Process. For example, we have hundreds of Television Channels mostly reinforcing the stereotype and family drama or just mindless time pass. Cinema and Television being the most powerful media with maximum reach should instead be also leveraged better for inculcating social values, correct civic behavior, importance of cleanliness & hygiene, social manners on the roads, public places or crowds, how to respect a line or care for elders / women / children, on the need for ethical behaviors and so on. *The need of the hour now as we "Transform" is for reinforcing the fact that we in India / Bharat are seen as a society that is educated, smart, intelligent, informed, clean, fit, healthy, patriotic, cultured, proud to be an Indian and not compromising on ethics and values - the way we were before the process of decaying social fabric began.* In spite of being a country that taught Bhagavat Gita and Non Violence to the world, our social image across the world and within India requires a major re-positioning and correction today. Also, such a transformation need not necessarily be categorized and constrained by the language, religion or region we belong to. As an example, all this medium today has successfully captivated our youth so effectively that it is steadily stepping up the aspirations of good and better living and attributing new norms for the term "Winner", "What is right and what is wrong etc" .. And we can surely use this very medium even more effectively to spread the positive messages on the need for Transformation for the better. As an example, Today, much that rides on a powerful media like Television is very mediocre, repetitive and often wasteful content in the name "Entertainment" or so called "24x7 News". This medium today only has News on politicians/bollywood/unpleasant events around the country or at best Sports. We can surely include real positive news (not fabricated) about all the great things that even normal people do across various regions, industries and walks of life, set better examples for the youth of this nation on how to succeed as a normal citizen of the country by just doing the right things. All these powerful mediums can become more and more inclusive going forward and need not remain restricted to celebrities and politicians alone. *A 24x7 medium of powerful visual / print communications that can literally "push" content into every home and personal space in this country can surely do a lot more for transforming the people and youth of the country.* Today it is being used mostly for contrary or ineffective wasteful messaging. I am not suggesting that we need to censor or control the content - All I am saying is that the quality and volume of positive transformation oriented content and messaging for such "Nationwide Transformation" will have to be stepped up considerably in larger proportions and in a much more organised way. Such efforts will also require co-ordination across ministries and regions that will need collaborative planning and enforcement. Regards, Padmaja Krishnan more
