Power Situation in India - Inputs on Issues

Dear Friends,

Power Supply and Electricity is a basic service for citizens and is critical for businesses and the country to operate effectively.

We have frequent power outages in many urban parts of India, leading to either inefficiency or increased cost of deriving power from alternate sources. Over 40% of Rural India still uses Kerosene to light their houses.

With this post, I request all of you to list Issues when it comes to the Power Situation in India.

We will follow this with a post on Root Causes and Solutions. The objective would be to put together a collective citizen whitepaper that we can share with PMO, Ministry of Power and any others associated to drive some action that will improve the situation.

I look forward to your inputs!

1.power theft is known and allowed deliberately. This should be fixed first. every dept. employee connected in connivance with the users, to be jailed for 5 yrs. 2.Solar, wind mill to be encouraged and govt should monitor and weekly updates sent to state, central ministry, which should be made known to people. more
The Govt. of India should examine the effect of inefficiency in electricity generation and distribution on the electricity tariffs charged to the end users (people like you & me). Electricity is an absolutely necessary resource for economic growth. Most of the generation & distribution is done by PSU's etc. We all know that these entities -- a) have 3 to 4 times more employees than required; b) are plagued by pilferage; c) are wasteful & inefficient in their working. more
why govt is not promoting non conventionsl energy like wind power, solar power, etc. subsidies may be provided and implemented without involving politicians and middlemen. power theft should be punished. illegal utilisation of power by people holding public meetings should be stopped and punished. more
