Plastic bag scam

There is a new kind of cheating that is going on openly and consumers do not seem to be aware of it. When any item is purchased it is the responsibility of the seller to pack the purchased item in a suitable bag or box without any extra charge. But most unfortunately, supermarkets, and now even wine stores, in Hyderabad, on the pretext of discouraging plastic carry bags, are demanding extra payment for the carry bag. Calculating the number of people that visit supermarkets and wine shops every day, it is obvious that the consumers are being taken for a ride to the tune of crores of rupees per day. This is a scam, and obviously the retailers, the Government agencies and the plastic bag manufacturers are hand in glove. Why should the consumers pay for a carry bag or package when they are already paying for it through purchase of the items.
If the government is serious about controlling pollution, it should immediately ban the manufacture and supply of plastic bags, and make it mandatory for all retailers to use only biodegradable bags, and supply them to consumers at no extra cost.
I look forward to responsible members to raise a voice against this kind of blatant cheating. Government is only fooling the people in the name of controlling pollution, but in fact this type of management has made no difference; plastic bags continue to pollute the environment. Our slogan should be... ban plastic bags totally... Supply biodegradable bags to consumers without extra charge.
I further wish to emphasize here that it may appear as a matter of a few rupees and not worthy of our attention... but NO.. if you calculate the lakhs and lakhs of people who visit these shops to purchase their daily requirements, you will be surprised that it amounts to many crores per day, and we are openly being cheated into paying these crores. This is unfair. more

Traders will not say , 'no bag' or charge rs 100 per bag for fear of business. But they can be directed by the concerned authorities to sell disposable cloth or jute bags at reasonable rate like 15 or 20 rupees. if the customer handle properly the same can (may) be used again. This will be most useful at vegetable markets where people returning home go to purchase. This may treated as important as "NIRIDH" which were made available at all important places.Plastic can be reduced to a greater extent. more
Shopkeepers or so called Banias are the most unscrupulous lot who cannot think beyond making money. They will come out with such things. There should be a drive against this organised loot. Hope the matter will be taken up through this avenue as well. more
I fully endorse what you have written Mr. Korada. I have been asking departmental stores why they are selling plastic bags when they are against the use of plastic but they just shrug and laugh. Westside is now selling Paper bags to its customers and making profit!!!! more
I would say they are doing a good job charging customers for carry bags. it is done purposely to desist customers from buying fresh carry bags and then throwing them away as waste. I would suggest people should make it a habit of carrying cloth bags with them whenever they visit a store or even to buy fruits or vegetables and if cloth bag not available, better carry old plastic bags which usually every household has. Problem is store owners charge only 4/- or at the most 5/- for each carry bag which customers dont mind paying. I do not own any store as such, but if its my way, I would ask for Rs. 100 for each and every carry bag even if it means I dont make any sale. more
Yes , the carry bag should be supplied along with the purchased items. The Mongini Cake is also demanding the bag charges . Hence I always carry by own cloth bag to discourage the selling of polythene bag along with the items. more
