Make in India/Manufacturing - Key Issues

Dear Friends

Our PM wants to make India a nation with excellence in manufacturing. As he outlined in his Aug 15th speech, he is inviting the world to Make in India.

Keeping that in mind, we invite you to list every issue that exists today preventing us from achieving Manufacturing Excellence.

Once we identify the issues, we will work on the Root Causes and Solutions and submit the final whitepaper to the PMO and ministries associated with the subject.

I look forward to your inputs!

- Lack of Precision Parts, due to technological bans. 3D Printing solves this. High speed DMLS is a great option. In India, we can scavenge plastic and convert it to non-exportible Plastic for Printing. - Lack of high-availability solutions to reduce cost. We should have enough machines and people to take care of emergencies. - Lack of uninterrupted power and metering solutions. - Lack of logistics & demand prediction and real-time tracking more
Make in India/Manufacturing - Key Issues Labour is an important factor of production. Before starting with program of "MAKE IN INDIA" we should first consider the fact that the Minimum Wages Act of India remains untouched for the past many years. Inflation has been taking place in leaps and bounds during the course of the past few years. The price of chaval, aloo, kanda and gehu does not vary much from what it is prevailing in Kanyakumari and Kasmir or Mumbai and Kolkatta. So what we need is an uniform minimum wages applicable for entire India. If this is linked with the cost of living index with 2014 as base year, then all the better. Once this is fixed, the minimum EPF pension, ESIC and EPF limits can be revised accordingly. Because of the lack of an attractive minimum wages, employers still pay the age old minimum wages. As a result of this technically qualified youngsters work for a couple of years in India just for acquiring experience and migrate to foreign countries for better paid jobs. In order to stop this "BRAIN DRAIN" fixing a reasonable minimum wages comes of utmost importance in this context. The next problem labour is facing is that out of total employees benefits are given by employers only to a few senior staff only. The technically qualified youngsters always remain outside roll. Their low salary is usually paid in cash without any benefits like ESIC, EPF, Leave benefits, gratuity benefits, bonus benefits etc. Naturally these youngsters seldom feel attracted to Indian jobs and when they are offered better jobs, on better salary and other benefits they migrate to foreign countries and most of them settle there also. Under these circumstances the aged parents of these youngsters who spend a lifetime educating and training them end up their lives in some old age homes. If the Government insist that all transactions above Rs.2000 should go through banks, then most employers will be forced to show all labour on roll and hence they become entitled to all benefits like minimum wages, ESIC, EPF, minimum wages, bonus, leave benefits, gratuity etc. This can effectively control BRAIN DRAIN. As such before we start Making in India, we should create a congenial atmosphere for the labour first. Otherwise we will not be able to stop BRAIN DRAIN. If we are increasing the overtime hours we should also fix minimum wages of 8 hours and an attractive overtime rate for above 8 hours work. If we insist that ladies also work overtime and work in night shifts we should ensure that they are safely taken home by the employer in company vehicles. more
