Modi should stop MPs gifting themselves massive pay hikes, at taxpayers' expense:
The recommendation of a 100% hike in the salaries of MPs by a parliamentary panel is completely unjustified. The proposal is said to be awaiting the PMO's nod. Prime Minister Narendra Modi must utilise this opportunity to put his foot down and prevent the extravagant proposal from going through. If accepted, the proposal would not only double salaries but also perks such as constituency allowance and secretarial allowance. Even the furniture allowance may go up to Rs 1.5 lakh alongside a 75% raise in pensions. Such hikes, which have no basis in economic ground realities, will all be realised at the expense of the hapless taxpayer.
There are two issues here. First, the practice of MPs deciding on their own pay hikes is a glaring conflict of interest. Second, for the sake of accountability MPs' salaries need to be in sync with their output. At a time when Parliament gets disrupted frequently and very little legislative work gets done, MPs can't keep gifting them selves massive pay hikes. A good way to go would be to index their salary hikes to GDP growth. This way , they would be forced to work harder for economic growth instead of delinking themselves from the economy and the general fate of the country, like feudal princes and nobles. Especially at a time when large parts of the country are reeling from drought, this is an appalling signal to send out.
Modi is said to favour MP salary hikes to be linked to increments for other posts such as that of President, Vice-President or cabinet secretary. That, too, is a better way to go than MPs deciding their own salaries. Rationalising legislators' salaries through an objective and independent mechanism is the only just solution. Modi should use the power of his office to implement it.

The MPs have absolutely no right to get any pay hike, because of a number of reasons: 1. They only disrupt the parliamentary proceedings. It should be no work - no pay for them. In fact they should be penalized for obstructing work in the parliament, and made to work overtime to pass any bills. 2. They are not affected by the increasing cost of living, because food, travel, housing, electricity, water, etc are all free for them. 3. When parliament in in recess, they should be forced to spend the time in their respective constituencies, looking after the grievances of the people who have voted for them, improving the living conditions out there. The huge amount of money allocated to them for the purpose should be audited and they should be held answerable for its use. 4. The job of the MPs should be made non-pensionable. Even for govt servants the pension is no longer automatic; they have to subscribe and pay for it throughout their career. How can the MPs "work" for just 5 years and get lifelong pension? more
Well, India is time n again proving to be a "Banana Republic"... Look at the kind of 'Political Leadership' is being Projected even after 70 long Years of so-called 'Parliamentary Democracy' ... Not a singe Politician is Honest & Patriot ... all Self-serving Goons! Beauty is hapless Public has NO CHOICE ... Take it OR Leave it ... A True "BANANA REPUBLIC"... Bharat Mata Ki Jai Ho !!! more
its very BAD,,if the pay should raise then based on service to the public.. more
Pay based on performance should be the base. secondly the politicians are the custodians of the country and the resources ...no one has forced them to join to do public service (as most of them claim they are here to service the public) ...hence getting water/electricity etc at subsidized rates including house etc is enough for them ...when highly qualified professionals who are educated can sustain in just 20K in a metropolitan city then the politician should be very lucky and should be happy to receive 50 K as take home ......baki sab to they are getting at subsidized rates ...in fact not just politicians we should also revisit the salary and benefits being given to other government verticals like IAS/IPS/IRS etc. more
