Jaggery is a very rich source of potassium. Potassium helps negate the ill-effects caused due to sodium. We all know what impact excess sodium has on blood pressure - it disturbs the water balance, which, in turn, obstructs smooth blood flow through blood vessels. Potassium works as a diuretic - it makes you urinate and expel extra sodium. Therefore, jaggery may help blood pressure spikes in control, but only if it is consumed in moderation.
Do share your experiences with it esp if u have used it successfully to manage BP more

I would appreciate a Doctor, Specialist, best would be a Hematologist to comment on this aspect. Because it is all about the right Electrolyte balance. To my knowledge, In moderately high BP or rather mild fluctuation cases avoiding additional salt intake (over the normally used in cooking) or use of Rock salt to taste, to the cooked food may be sufficient. On the other hand tilting the electrolytic balance towards excess of K -Potassium may cause other side effects like stress on heart. I think we should restrict to a little supplementations only. In many parts of our country there is a practice of taking a little jaggery after food. Our body has a Homeostasis system that tends to normalise the effect any excess to a certain extent. For example body adjusts to Warm or extremely cold climate and maintains our body temperature the same. more
The suggestion to increase potassium levels to improve the potassium / sodium balance across the body cell walls (called the sodium / potassium pump) is correct. However, it may be best to improve the potassium levels through green salads and vegetables especially for diabetics and older people. Most of us tend to be deficient in potassium because the actual daily requirement can be as high as 4700 mg. This can be met naturally through as much as 7-8 cups of green salad or a mix of green salad, vegetables etc. more
