INDIGO FLIGHT

I booked the air ticket in INDIGO for 11/11/18 to travel from Chandigarh to Mumbai. with my family (3 persons), I received a call from INDIGO 2 days prior to departure date and told that the flight is cancelled due to operational problem and you have choice to change the date and it was available after 2 days, which i didn't prefer or go from chandigarh to Delhi and travel from Delhi to Mumbai. Which was also not possible due to family.
Finally I asked them to cancelled and they refunded a very full return fare. The problem was that I had to buy ticket for the same day from jet airways and I had to pay 3 times of what indigo refunded. It was huge amount . Luckily I had debit card with that huge value for payment. otherwise if there are 5 -6 persons , how can they afford.
Now in such case , whats the alternate? Can we claim INDIGO for the same amount as jet charged me?
Or Any rules regulations so I can get my additional money , meaning more that what INDIGO paid? more

This is a useless policy which our Government has allowed. What should be done is that if the prices increase if the travel date is near, similarly the refund should also increase if the aviation company cancels the flight. Unfortunately the policies only favour the corporates and not the consumers. more  
Basically, many airlines are over booking their flights and if no ticket is cancelled, they message a few customers that the flight is cancelled or give some other reason. Regarding compensation for cancellation, international flight operators give fairly big amounts in such case in addition to ticket for some other flight. There is a need for travellers to come together and make aviation ministry change rules for domestic airlines in Bharat. more  
They should accommodate you in next flight departing from the origin Location. more  
Only solution is to have a travel insurance cover to tide over such eventualities of last minute cancellations of flights. The excess would be made good by the insurer. I got compensated when my flights got cancelled in one instance. more  
Pls guide which Insurance policy is available for domestic flight cancellations more  
It is a fact that last minute cancellation of flight puts the passenger in hardship and also makes him run from pillar to post to arrange alternative as the tickets have been booked well planned. Last minute journey costs fortune in any mode of travel and hence it is fair to make the airline reimburse the total ticket charges born by the passenger or a minimum of three times the cost of booking the tickets by the passenger. more
