While we have open discussions on Electoral Funding and Education Reforms, we are opening a third one in parallel on the subject suggested by many of you - Agriculture.
Through this post I request everyone in this circle to share their inputs on the Current Issues we face in the Agricultural sector.
Let us list everything we can. We will then follow our structured approach and work on Root Causes and Solutions through separate posts.

1. Sharing of weather forecast at village & Block level either by SMS's or by forming a group of Farmers of specified area, since local level weather forecast is not available. Absence of local info. adversely affects yield whether its excess rains or deficient ones. 2. Sharing of modern practices in Agriculture along high yielding Seeds to farmers, which is going to improve yield/acre. 3. Implementation of Drip Irrigation pan India, which increases yield/acre. 4. Increased Usage of Organic manure (stubble used in burning is used for producing manure / free of cost supply of manure. 5. Dismantling of APMC across india and produces can be transported across India (Somehow very few states have done it) & farmers needs to be guided / helped in disposing of their produce in market / state of their choice. 6. Self Help Groups / forming of team of volunteers who can help farmers / implementation '/ guiding farmers in said contexts. Industry can be roped in said exercise as part of their CSR activities. more

Some suggestions : 1. Agriculture science and engineering college( similar in standard to IITs ) in each district. Admissions only to residents of the district. The university to be equipped with modern lab and research facility. 2. College to offer graduate/post graduate courses in agricultural science,agricultural engineering,agricultural Management. 3. College to also offer short term diploma/certificate courses in skill development in agricultural area like : soil testing, post harvest management, agricultural produce storage systems, watershed management and development, agri business/agri finance, response to weather conditions,seeds selection, etc. . Separate short term courses with similar subjects to be specially designed for farmers young and old. While designing the course content it should be ensured that situations/conditions special/peculiar to the district like rain fall,soil conditions etc. are dovetailed in to the course. 4. Model farms to be developed by the college for demonstration of beneficial farm technologies and methods. 5. Utmost care to be taken not to force new methods but to build on traditional wisdom and knowledge, by first learning the concept/logic behind traditional knowledge. 6. Over a period the college to open branches at each taluka in the district to initially offer specific short term courses relevant to the Taluka conditions. 7. State government to provide infra structure at Taluka/district ,to set up "Farmer's Markets". more

1.Make agriculture as a basic subject in schools and also there should be videos available to every one about how new technologies should be used in farms by farmers. 2.Make reforms such that individuals/Private companies invest in the farming sector. 3.Make reforms such that organic foods should be available to every one in the country. more
