How food labelling works in India

When you see "High Fibre" or "Sugar free" on a packed label, these are not just catch phrases.

๐Ÿ”ด There are rules by which a company can claim these things on the food label.

๐Ÿ”ด Although you the customer might find it mislabelling (as we have pointed out many times), their claims stand legally.

๐Ÿ”ด So to not fall for these claims, one should know the what these claims actually mean & how they are not as obvious as you think.

1๏ธโƒฃ Low Calorie/ Calorie Free:

๐Ÿ”ด Any product with less than 40 kcal per 100 gms (solid) or 20 kcal per 100 ml (liquid) can be labelled as "Low Calorie"

๐Ÿ”ด Any liquid with less than 4 kcal can be called "Calorie free"

2๏ธโƒฃ Low Fat/ Fat Free

๐Ÿ”ด Less than 3g Fat per 100g (solid) & 1.5 g per 100ml (liquid) is "Low Fat"

๐Ÿ”ด Less than 0.5g fat per 100g (solid) & 100ml (liquid) is "Fat Free"

3๏ธโƒฃ High Fibre/Rich in Fibre

๐Ÿ”ด More than 6g per 100g or 3g per 100kcal can be claimed as "High Fibre"

4๏ธโƒฃ Trans Fat Free

๐Ÿ”ด Less than 0.2g trans fat per 100g (solid) or 100ml (liquid) is labelled "Trans Fat free"

5๏ธโƒฃ Low Sugar/Sugar Free

๐Ÿ”ด Sugars means Monosaccharides (Glucose, fructose) & Disaccharides (Maltose, Sucrose, Lactose..)

๐Ÿ”ด Less than 5g sugar per 100g (solid) or 2.5 g per 100 ml (liquid) is called "Low Sugar"

๐Ÿ”ด Less than 0.5 g sugars in 100 g (solid) or 100 ml (liquid) is "Sugar Free"

6๏ธโƒฃ Low GI

๐Ÿ”ด Glycemic Index below 55 can be labelled "Low GI"

7๏ธโƒฃ Protein Source/High Protein

๐Ÿ”ด More than 10% of RDA per 100 g (solid)
or 5% of RDA per 100 ml (liquid) is "Protein Source"

๐Ÿ”ด More than 20% of RDA per 100 g (solid)
or 10% of RDA per 100 ml (liquid) is "High Protein" or "Protein Rich"

๐Ÿ”ด Keep in mind RDA of Protein is very low!

๐Ÿ”ด Like wise many many more of these regulations.

๐Ÿ”ด Everything on the Label has a meaning "Pure", "Fresh", "Traditional"... all have different meaning (will cover another time).

๐Ÿ”ด Your best bet as the customer is to not consume packaged food or limit is greatly. And if you do, have a basic awareness of such things so that you can make informed choices. more
