Good cooking oils

Hi All,

I would like to hear your thoughts on the coooking oil used in your kitchen and the benefits you see with it. I was thinking of switching from Saffola to Olive oil. But them got mixed reviews that cooking with olive oil above it's heating point might create toxins causing cancerous impact. Ofcourse, using any oil in moderation is best but since oil is so often used in our cooking, I would like to know the oils which have better health benefits. -Sandhya more

Anubha, thank you so much for explaining all this. Very hard to find this information otherwise. I will keep an eye on the MUFA, PUFA, SFA and Trans fat from now on :) Look forward to getting more information like this from you in future. more
No oil is fully saturated or unsaturated. All oils contain a certain amount of all fatty acids. Thus olive oil though predominantly MUFA, will have small amounts of SFA. And sunflower though more of PUFA, will contain MUFA also. This is why we need to use different oils – at least 2 kinds – in our cooking. more
From the nutrition aspect, fats may be segregated as healthy and unhealthy fats. We have monounsaturated fats (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fats (PUFA) which are the healthy fats and which we should use more of daily. Of these two, we should consume more of MUFA. Of the unhealthy fats, which are of two kinds, trans fats and saturated fatty acids (SFA), trans are the worst kind and that which should be totally avoided. We may totally avoid or restrict saturated fats as we choose. more
Just to add, even I could not find it printed on 'Mother Dairy Pure Ghee, made from Cows milk. I would also like to know which one is good, bad for us. Saturated, Mono, Poly? more
Thanks all for your response! How do we check SFA:MUFA:PUFA ration? I was expecting it to be printed on the container label but couldn't find it for Saffola and Olive oil that I have. Also, what's the difference between various kinds of fats - Saturated, Trans, Mono, Poly. Which are the ones we should watch out for? more
