Games of adulterations have become quite sophisticated. Tests described are of little help to detect myriads of techniques of adulterations. Just a few example : (1) major adulterant in coconut oil is liquid paraffin, and not other oils. Method: Take a small amount ( say 2ml ) of the sample in a test tube and boil it with about 5 ml. of washing soda solution. Leave it undisturbed for about 5 min. Liquid paraffin or mineral oil will form a separate layer. (2) common adulterant in ghee/butter is hydrogenated oil. Method: Take small amount (say 1-2 ml) of the sample, add approx. 1 gm of powdered cane sugar and 1-2 ml. of hydrochloric acid ( common latrine acid also may(!) serve. An intense red-violet colour indicates adulteration. Why (!) mark? A common proverb- if the mustard used to de-ghost (an individual) itself contains the ghost, the exercise is bound to fail. more
